Movie Reviews of They Died with Their Boots OnMovie Review: Errol Flynn's Best Movie Summary: 5 StarsNo other movie captures Errol Flynn's fine qualities as much as this one.
Movie Review: Idealized but fun. Summary: 4 StarsWe see a lot of good stuff here:Errol Flynn is a swashbuckling George Armstrong Custer. Olivia de Havilland is the love of his life. Gene Lockhart is the father who doesn't approve of Custer. Sidney Greenstreet is the gruff onion loving General Winfield Scott, Anthony Quinn is the brave and honorable chief Crazy Horse. If that isn't enough we have a supporting cast that does a first rate job. We see action, adventure, daring do, bravery, honor and respect for friend and foe. We see the American Indian portrayed as a wronged people. "..If I were Sioux I would fight." We see true friendship, true bravery, true honor. The only thing we don't see is a true story. It would take much too long to go through every rewrite history goes through in this picture, but who cares. If you want history; buy Ken Burns THE CIVIL WAR. This movie is fun. Flynn idolized Custer is just as unhistorical as Richard Mulligan's brillant performance in LITTLE BIG MAN but no less brillant. The movie is properly compared to Kevin Costner in ROBIN HOOD PRINCE OF THIEVES and Michael Keaton in BATMAN in the following sense. Great cast, great movie, great story but its not the story of the guy they say it is.
Movie Review: Hollywood vrs. History?Sometimes Being Entertained is Fine Summary: 4 StarsThis was the movie I grew up on as a kid...my favorite.......is it historically accurate. No. But you know, precious little is of Custer. Remember he peaked at age 25 in his military career and never really grew as a person. I suspect the depth played by Flynn far exceeds that of the real Custer. This movie also was released about the same time Pearl Harbor actually occurred. It is good, healthy, fun and entertainment, does not put Native Americans in a bad light......enjoy it. It is American History as we want it to be, and that's not always bad.
Movie Review: Watched 40 Times + Summary: 5 StarsI'm 45 years old and I have been watching Boots since I was eight years old in Chicago. I first thought the history of GAC was this film. I have read four different books about GAC, and each one does have a mirror image of Boots (wishful thinking?). I agree with everyone else that the chemistry between Flynn and De Havilland is awsome. As a kid I always thought they would be a couple forever. Since watching this movie as a kid I structured my life some what on the style Flynn portraited GAC. Proud of my appearance in the military and law enforcement uniform, not afraid to be a leader, and how to be suave with the ladies. I once used the closing line of Boots "Walking through life with you at my side ....... I did tell the girl it was from Boots. Boots was a motivating film getting me interested in horses. I own six. Once I was asked where I learned to ride so well. I answered "Errol Flynn." I enjoy the part at the end of the movie when Flynn takes his position in front of the throops leaving the fort for the last time. He rode his horse to the "Gere Owen" (phonetic), as a horse rider, I thought it was "awesome." Sometimes when training my horses I play the tune in my head. It helps my posture and pace of the horse. God Bless Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland.
Movie Review: How to make a Dakota warrior cry Summary: 4 StarsIt took me years to finally decide to watch this movie, since I'm part Dakota, and an historian, but never mind history. Watch this one for the interaction between Flynn and Olivia. They are incredible together; the onscreen chemistry that began to bubble in "Captain Blood" comes full circle as these two actors who adored each other on and off screen give one last amazing performance together. As Laddie5 comments, their final scene is intensely moving, because you can almost hear Errol Flynn's heart breaking, and as he delivers the "...most gracious thing..." line -well, if you're a Flynn-DeHavilland fan, it's tough.
