Movie Reviews of The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)Movie Review: Masterpiece Summary: 5 StarsShame on me for taking so long to purchase this piece of world history. I had seen World at War over the years on TV, but never saw the complete work. If you are a history buff and interested in the molding of this great world we live in, this is a must. I would like to think that we could make it mandatory for our children to watch and study in school. But, I will leave it because unfortunatly that will never happen. If anyone is reading this and is thinking about buying this fine set, think no further, DO IT. You will be greatly rewarded with this masterfull piece of our history.
Movie Review: World at War collection Summary: 5 StarsExcellent collection. Enjoyed it and could not watch anything else until we finished the series. Arrived very quickly.
Movie Review: The best documentary on WWII in my opinion. Summary: 5 StarsI was 12 years old when this series arrived in the US thanks to PBS. Sir Laurence Olivier is the narrator and there were many principals and ordinary people still alive who consented to interviews. It was an amazing thing to watch with my parents because they would comment on certain things, having lived through it.
Movie Review: A Treasure Summary: 5 StarsMost Americans have no idea how much the Soviet Union suffered during WWII. I bought this so my children will know that story, as well as the broad expanse of the most fascinating period in modern history. The recent Ken Burns documentary was excellent, from a narrow point of view, but it pales in comparison to this epic.
Movie Review: Finest Documentary on WWII Summary: 5 StarsDespite all the hoopla over Ken Burns' "The War", I was a bit let down, feeling it lacked something. It did stir a memory however, of a very compelling series I had seen, in part, as a boy. "The World At War" was the series and I have found it to be even better than my boyish memory of it. It is so completely comprehensive. Each episode deals with a particular aspect of the war, such as the "Final Solution", the Fall of France and D-Day, in completion so you get the full impact of the theme of each chosen episdoe, from inception to the end of the war, rather than getting mixed details on a strict timeline for the war as a whole. This results in overlap, which actually brings more clarity and understanding to the war as a global phenomena, experienced so differently at the same moment by so many people. I wonder why schools don't just run this documentary and then have class discussions on it, as it is so perfectly laid out for understanding and in-depth study. Enjoy Ken Burns' work by all means, but get this collection if you want to really understand WWII as the beast that changed our world forever.
