Movie Reviews of The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)Movie Review: THE WORLD AT WAR Summary: 5 StarsSeveral years ago I watched this series on TV and I believe it is the best documentary on World War II ever produced. It is even better on the DVD Disk in that the commentary about all the research that went into producing this great piece of history; and, the people that did it. I believe that this documentary should be every school in the nation. I am 68 years old and I think that today's schools are not covering history in the classes as they should--this documentary certainly explains how the war came about, what happen during the war, the countries involved, and the conclusion of the war. This work is in my opinion the finest documentary on World War II.

Movie Review: Pick this one Summary: 5 StarsI bought this for my son-in-law for a Christmas present, even though I'd like to have it for myself. He says it is the best he's ever seen on WWII and I agree! The footage and narration of this series is far beyond our expectations!
Movie Review: DEFINITIVE & ENJOYABLE Summary: 5 Stars
I have the unfortunate privilege of having paid $119.95 for this set several years ago, and see the price being on one-third that. Be that as it may, I remain very glad to have this set of 5 DVDs.
Whether this is "the definitive history of the second world war" as tauted on the box, is open for discussion, but make no mistake that for anyone interested in World War II, these DVDs are a must.
This collection not only draws on a wide amount of material, but includes many primary interviews with people such as: Traudl Junge, Hitler's secretary, Karl Wolff, SS General and Hitler's adjutant, Marquis Kido, Emperor Hirohito's chief advisory, Heinz Linge, Hitler's valet, Mitsuo Fuchida, leader of the Pearl Harbor attack, James Stewart, film actor and U.S. pilot, recently deceased Paul Tibbets of the Enola Gay, etc., etc., and etc. And while most of these people are deceased, their words and thoughts live on in this magnificent production from the 1970's brought up-to-date and re-released.
I have viewed these discs several times and still value them. Cannot stress their importance enough for anyone interested in an in depth view and review of the Second World War.

Movie Review: MUCH BETTER THAN BURN'S "THE WAR" Summary: 5 StarsI watched this wonderful historical documentary again for the first time in over 30 years. Originally produced by, I believe, the UK's Thames TV and the Imperial War Museum this masterpiece in documentary still holds up well after all these years. The 30th Anniversary edition gives you bonus footage with the producers and crew on the making of The World At War. While it is not all inclusive of everything leading up to and occuring during WWII it comes pretty damn close. Unlike Victory At Sea's using the war as a backdrop for the musical composition there is a minimum of staged material to be found in The World At War and when it does occur you, the viewer, are given a heads up. Also, The World At War is much better at telling the story and presenting the drama without all the syrupy sentimentality and political correctness one finds in anything done by Ken Burns, especially his piece done with Lynn Novick, The War. If The World At War has a fault it tends to, I feel, at times, to over credit the Brits, especially in joint operations. But this is certainly counterbalanced by is shockingly truthful portrayal of well known British and American Generals, many still living when the series was produced, who still, after 30 years could not admit their own failings. And the greatest added bonus of all is the priceless narration of all episodes by Sir Laurance Olivier. This is historical documentary film making at its finest and should be in the library of all students of that period of world history.
Movie Review: Voices From the Past Summary: 5 StarsAs other reviewers note, this is by far the best documentary ever made concerning what is arguably the most momentous series of events in the history of humanity. What most struck me this time around, having seen this several times over the years, was the extraordinary gift of hearing the voices of so many people with direct and consequential experience of the war. People such as Britons Brian Horrocks (the commander of Britain's XXX Corps) and Lord Mountbatten; the Germans General von Manteufel and Hitler's secretary Traudl Jungl; Americans General Lawton Collins and Captain James Stewart; an extraordinary group of Russians; and a great many others, all now long gone, saw and were a consequential part of the unimaginable. Watch their eyes as they give witness, remember their testimony, and reflect. An amazing work and moving beyond measure.
