Movie Reviews of The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)

Movie Review: Brilliant TV series, shoddy DVD release
Summary: 3 Stars

I very much regret A&E Home Video chose to do an extremely amateurish job of producing The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition). Laurence Olivier's fine narration is barely audible during the initial ten or twelve seconds of many episodes, a situation which could and should have been corrected by A&E Home Video; and at the end of every episode the viewer of this product is instantaneously clobbered with a way-too-loud blast of recently-included advertising, something A&E Home Video could and should have moderated.

This brilliant television series deserved better. Thankfully, excellence of material far outweighs those errors A&E Home Video committed in producing the boxed set; but they are none the less aggravations which distract the viewer and hence detract from this release's expected quality.

My rating of three stars is the best compromise I could think of, between the one-star rating A&E Home Video deserves and the five-star rating I'd give the television series itself. One wonders, doesn't one, why no quality control was implemented prior to release of this product?

Movie Review: Excellent series
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best overall views of WWII. It was produced when many of the main leaders and commanders were still alive. Interviews and comments from them are included.

Movie Review: good buy
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He saw it in a BBC catalog and remembered watching it on Sunday afternoons when he was a boy. I was excited to get it for half the price on Amazon. He has enjoyed the DVD's immensely. Any history buffs would love them.

Movie Review: A must have
Summary: 5 Stars

This is without doubt one of the best video histories of WW II that I have ever seen. I have over 300 hours of video on this period and this set stands at the top of the list. Well written and directed with virtually no fabricated shots. The video that is reenacted is identified. This is not the typical, all combat production. Each of the major areas involved in the conflict are explored. (Russian involvement, the British home front, the Holocaust, the stories behind the headlines.) The interviews are incredible. There is no judging or second guessing, just a clear and honest explanation of what took place. This is a must have for any history buff. It should be a must for everyone, to see how closely our present times mirror the period from 1933 to 1945. This set will not disappoint you.

Movie Review: A brief comment
Summary: 5 Stars

The World at War was an amazing series, perhaps the most epic ever done. The only thing that I can think of that is comparable was the earlier Victory at Sea series. The second world war was unique in many ways, but fortunately for posterity, one of the main differences was the extent to which the great powers documented their efforts on film. Through the thousands of film clips that make up this series, the viewer is drawn into the stark reality of total war in a way that would have been impossible just a few years before. It's a riveting and fascinating chronicle of the last of the 20th century's great wars, and I learned a tremendous amount just by watching it, since modern history isn't my strong point. This might be the greatest documentary series ever produced and aired, and itself ranks as a historic achievement in the history of filmmaking.
