Movie Reviews of The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)Movie Review: Best WWII documentary of all time. Summary: 5 StarsI received this as a gift in 2006. I remember watching some of the original series on TV when I was a kid. I had forgotten how great this documentary was. This is easily the best WWII documentary I have ever seen. It's even better than the Battlefield series from Polygram video. I can't think of any other documentary, other than The War, that is more comprehensive. There are many interviews with former soldiers, and politicians. It was especially interesting to see interviews with Albert Speer and Traudl Junge (Hitler's former secretary). There is also a ton of terrific footage (some color). While the series focuses mainly on the War in Europe, the Pacific Theater gets good treatment. The series starts out at present day France (1970's), showing a small burnt out town. You learn that the Germans came to this town one day and murdered every man, woman and child living there. The town is left standing as a monument, and reminder. This really sets the tone for the series. The music is great, very haunting. Laurence Olivier does a great job as narrator. At 11 discs, with some very good extras, it will take you a while to watch it all. It's worth it though. If you are a WWII buff, you don't want to miss this.
Movie Review: World at War (30th year edition) Summary: 5 StarsThis is the best series on WWII and finally it's out in DVD. Narrated by Olivier, so it has that super dramatic feeling. Filmed in the 70's, it is your last chance to see interviews with survivors who are now dead. Very strong in all battlefronts and segments. (Stalingrad is just horrific!)
Movie Review: A perfect gift. Summary: 5 StarsThis DVD collection is the perfect gift for anyone who loves history or WW2. The documentary is incredibly in-depth covering every single aspect of the war.
