Movie Reviews of The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition)Movie Review: Can't stop watching it Summary: 5 StarsThis series does the war of the century a great deal of justice. I purchased it about 4 months ago and have watched every episode at least twice. The European side of the war gets a bit more coverage, but the episodes on the War of the Pacific are superb, particularly the one that documents the battles of Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Leyte Gulf and Okinawa (on disk 6). The series is also effective in showing how the civilian population was affected in various countries. You will probably gain a great deal of respect and sympathy for the Russian people after watching the episodes on Leningrad and Stalingrad.
Movie Review: Definitive Documentary on WWII Summary: 5 StarsMade in the early 70's, this documentary is still the best one available on WWII, augmented by the fact that it was made while many of the participants were still alive. The documentary includes many interviews with eyewitnesses and actual combatants. The filmmakers, by their own admission, do not cover every aspect of the war (such an endeavor would require watching 100's of hours of filem) yet it still covers many of the major events and gives the viewer a very clear sense of how the war affected so many (the losses, the victories, the horror and human suffering) and how it shaped history.
Movie Review: Well worth the time spent watching Summary: 4 StarsWe had seen some episodes of this series when it was first released and had hoped ever since to see the whole thing. We have found it fascinating, if overwhelming at times. It is much more complete than the recent Ken Burns history of the Second World War and is a good complement to that series since The World at War is told from the British point of view (though a good deal of American, German, Russian, Japanese, etc. perspective is included as well). The look is a bit dated but the producers had access to many of the participants who have since died (like Albert Speer), and their perspective is invaluable. We would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Second World War and how our world today continues to deal with what happened then.
Movie Review: Great series from the 70's Summary: 5 StarsMost of the people interviewed are no doubt dead by now. Good for us that the BBC did this when they did.
Movie Review: A Great Visual Presentation OF WWII Summary: 5 StarsImages of the great stuggle that preceded my birth as a baby boomer. So much to see, so very intense and one wonders what could make the Axis think they way they thought and how will they ever repay the world for their crimes in all part of our world.
