Movie Reviews of The World's Greatest Lover

Movie Review: World's Greatest Lover
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderfully humorous and cute story line. Gene Wilder is always a good movie choice.

Movie Review: A Wilder Time at the Movies
Summary: 4 Stars

I remember fondly seeing this as a kid on a double-bill with the moonshine comedy "Thunder and Lightning"(check it out). Revisiting it again after thirty years I have to say it still holds up. I remember it came out around Christmas of '77 about the same time Wilder's mentor Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety" came out and the criticism of "The World's Greatest Lover" unfairly compared the two films. For sure the laughs are scattershot but I found more hits than misses. Wilder the director has imbued his film with great period detail. Wilder displays his inimatable neurotic comic brio here. The always solid Carol Kane is charming. Aside from Brooks stalwart Dom DeLuise Wilder employs some good veteran comic talent here(Carl Ballantine, Billy Sands, Ronnie Graham, Fritz Feld). Don't go into this with high expectations and you'll enjoy it. On a final trivial note, the actress portraying Wilder's reading partner, Candy Azzara, was cast as the original Gloria in the pilot for "All in the Family".

Movie Review: Finally!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been been waiting for this to be released to dvd forever. This is one of my favorite comedies. I remember seeing this flick at the movies with a friend and we both loved it, still quote it to this day.

Gene Wilder is at this best as Rudy Valentine. Carol Kane is adorable as Annie, his long-suffering wife. Dom DeLuise steals the movie as Adolph Zitz, troubled movie producer.

Lots of broad physical comedy and sight gags (ala Mel Brooks). Probably my favorite Gene Wilder portrayal (over Willy Wonka even!). If you are a Gene Wilder fan and have not seen this movie - get it. One of his best.

Movie Review: Wilder at his Best
Summary: 4 Stars

Along with Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother this was another one of my favorite movies as a child. The scene were Wilder's hotel room floods and he forces a family to swim in it as if it were a swimming pool is hysterical. It's been a while since I saw this, but I remember many scenes of bust out laughter. Also, Carol Kane is adorable in this movie with her big blue eyes and innocent smile. It makes the scene were she is mistaken as a prostitute even more funnier then it is. I will definitely buy this when it comes out, but for everyone else I would suggest it as a must rental.

Movie Review: Still Good
Summary: 4 Stars

I think this is an under rated gem. I saw this as a kid and loved it, and just recently watched it again and still thought it was great. Sure it is not the greatest comedy of all time, and not even Wilder's Best. But make no mistake it is funny. Filled with tons of small gags, physical and verbal humor, this one is funny. Just people's expressions in the film are great. Wilder is outstanding and an all star cast surrounds him. The plot is weak, but not the laughs.
