Movie Reviews of The World's Fastest Indian

Movie Review: A wonderful film with Hopkins at his best
Summary: 5 Stars

I had the pleasure of seeing the movie again recently and was reminded of just how wonderful a film this is. One of the best I have seen for a quite a while.

Anthony Hopkins gives a compelling performance as a motorcycle enthusiast from New Zealand who comes to the USA for a land speed tournament on the Bonneville Salt Flats. His bike is cobbled together from parts including the hinge from a kitchen door. An old Indian motorcycle with a previous top speed of 54 MPH and he is trying to get a land speed record of over 200 MPH, thus the movie title "The World's Fastest Indian".

The movie is so well done that you are quickly drawn into the story and the character. His portrayal of Burt Monro is depicted with such sincerity that you find yourself cheering along with the film and have a smile on your face throughout. It is rare to see a film where you feel you are personal friends with the lead character after the movie ends.

I recommend this highly. No matter what your interest level in motorcycles, you will enjoy this unforgettable film and have a wonderful experience along the way.

Movie Review: Not the best neighbor but a heck of a role model
Summary: 5 Stars

I wouldn't want to live next door to him, after all, Burt Munro:

revs his motorcycle up in the middle of the night
urinates on his lemon tree every morning to fertilize it
and sets his lawn on fire when neighbors complain he hasn't mowed it in a long time

On the other hand, Burt knows how to live. As he says to a young protege, "I've done more living running fast on this bike than many people have in their whole lives."

He's a man with a dream. He and his 1920 Indian motorcycle are going from their home in Invercargill, New Zealand to the Bonneville Salt Flats to break the world landspeed record. Only problem--the bike's 40 years old and Burt's ticker needs some nitro to keep it kicking.

The trip from NZ to Bonneville is quite a ride. Burt lands in what a friend calls "Hollyweird". His lovely motel clerk is a he, people don't speak English, Vietnam is in full throttle. Still, Burt takes all in stride.

This is a lovely story and one that everyone should see. I rented this film, but will probably buy it. Kudos to everyone working on this.

Movie Review: Dream movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Just like the movie "On any Sunday" became an icon in the Motorcycle World back in the day, "The World's Fastest Indian" will be the icon or cult movie for the current generation. Unbelievably true, and very entertaining for all. If your a Motorcycle person, your significant other won't be bored with techno-jargon not understood by "non-gearheads" its a very good story for date night or family movie night. Don't worry about the kids. The odd curse word or mild risque scenes (2) are tamer than an episode of NYPD Blues. This is a real story about a real person who was way ahead of his time in creativity. The scenes from Hollywood in the 60's are hilarious. This is truly a Motorcycle movie with some wholesome family style stuff thrown in. Buy it, share it with your friends, and next September, you may find yourself travleing to Utah to watch the 2007 Meet. If you have an old car or Motorcycle in your garage that needs to worked on and you have lost your drive to get it going, buy this movie. Its an inspiration for all. The scenes from New Zealand are lovely, go there on vacation. I did it. But that's another review.

Movie Review: Pursuing A Dream
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a good movie-- it's fortunate that Hollywood didn't film the story or it would have been full of car chases, gunfire, and explosions. Instead, it has a charming, low- key character played to perfection by Anthony Hopkins and a good screenplay. TWFI has what most movies lack these days-- quality.

This isn't really a "motorcycle movie"; my wife hadn't expected it to be something she would enjoy but she liked it a lot. The audience in the theater burst into applause at the end of the movie and an amazing number of them stayed to see the credits at the end. I could relate to Burt's hushed pronouncement when he arrived on the salt at Bonneville "...this is Holy ground, mate." I felt the same way when I set foot on that salt after reading about it for years in magazines like Hot Rod.

In some ways this story is similar to "October Sky" but that was about young boys fulfilling their dream of launching rockets-- this is about a man in the autumn of his years who fulfills his dream of riding his Indian Scout at Bonneville.

A truly enjoyable film-- see it.

Movie Review: The "Indian" is a motorcycle
Summary: 5 Stars

An eccentric New Zealander pensioner (Anthony Hopkins) with a passion for ancient motorcycles, especially the '20s vintage "Indian," overcomes hardship and journeys off to Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to try to set a new land speed record. He doesn't have much money and along the road he runs into a variety of good and bad people who help or hinder him. This small-town, talkative New Zealander has all sorts of clashes and encounters with the odd characters and brash Americans he encounters.

Hopkins is, of course, a superb actor and he has a large supporting cast of no-names who support him admirably. There's a lot of tension as Hopkins overcomes the obstacles in his path on the way to a wild ride over the salt flats. It's a picaresque theme that's been done a thousand times -- but never better than this.

"Indian" is a heart-warming movie that you can't help liking. The tugs on your heartstrings are contrived and hokey, but who cares? How can a movie about a poor old guy who rides fast motorcycles be anything other than a jewel?
