Movie Reviews of The World's Fastest Indian

Movie Review: One of the Best of 2006
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a big fan of cutesy, "goal movies" as I call them. You know what I'm talking about? The movies about the guy who has a goal and ends up reaching it at the end. Yeah, I don't like those movies. But this is truly a spectacular movie, that's not only one of the best movies I've seen in 2006 so far; but it's also inspiring and just a purely wonderful film.

Academy Award Winner Anthony Hopkins (Best Actor, Silence of the Lambs) plays Burt Munro, a New Zealand man who longs to race his Indian Motorcycle and set the record for fastest bike. After getting help from neighbors and fellow New Zealanders, Burt gets enough money to go to Los Angeles from where he will travel to Utah. This movie blends in strange road movie, so we have Burt meeting several colorful characters (including a transvestite at one point).

I can't really say more without ruining the movie, although you probably have figured out what happened at the end. I'd never heard of Burt Munro before seeing this movie, but Hopkins does an amazing job of portraying him. Hopkins makes this character so loveable and so cool, you want the guy to succeed. The racing scenes are incredibly spectacular and exciting, and this is a movie you can show to your entire family. The movie is entertaining throughout and never dull, so if you enjoyed movies like Cinderella Man or the like, you should be satisfied with this.

GRADE: A+

Movie Review: I'm so glad I watched this movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband is big into motorcycles so when he suggested watching this movie I was less than enthused. I am so glad I watched it with him! It was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time!

It's about Burt Munro who travels to the US from New Zealand to race his 1920 Indian motorcycle at the salt flats. Munro hits a few snags along the way trying to get there. The whole time you're cheering him on just for him to run into another obstacle. I laughed a lot watching this movie because this man made friends so easily (and quickly) with everyone, from a transvestite to an old woman living by herself to an Indian that gives him dog balls to help with his prostate. I had a big smile on my face and the best feeling after watching this movie. I'm also really glad (as is my husband) that I got a chance to see Anthony Hopkins play a role that is more pleasant. At first all we could do was picture him in Silence of the Lambs so it was a nice change of pace.

So if you're a motorcycle fan, an Anthony Hopkins fan or just want to see a "make you feel good" inspirational movie, this is the movie for you! Enjoy!

And just to add, I rarely ever buy movies. I have to absolutely love a movie before I spend my money buying it. I'm actually going to buy this one and make my husband think I bought it for his birthday!

Movie Review: A Sentimental Trill-ride
Summary: 5 Stars

Who doesn't like seeing an underdog beating the odds? Once in a while, we must remind ourselves of the force of sheer human willpower, and I cannot think of anyone better than Anthony Hopkins to fit the role.

An inspiring true story, this film is about one Burt Munro who strikes out on his own to fulfill a life-long dream on a paper-thin budget with his Indian motorcycle in tow, which he's honed to perfection. Meeting trials and tribulations along the way, he succeeds in winning the heart of everyone he meets. It's that irresistible Kiwi charm that does it, love. More than just an overcome-all-odd movie, The World's Fastest Indian turns into something much better. It's a film about the very basic of human instincts: survival.

Anthony Hopkins, always a pleasure to watch onscreen, turns in a moving and utterly lovable performance as the main protagonist. The scenes in which he is being slighted by big-city dwellers not only tugs at the heartstrings but yanks and trottles them with great pizzaz. The supporting characters are equally likeable, with the exception of those two very annoying females at the Bonneville event. (What purpose do they serve again?)

Watch this with your dad or grandpa. Or heck even your mom and grandma. This is all-around entertainment at its best.

Movie Review: Passion!
Summary: 5 Stars

Burt Munro's (Sir Anthony Hopkins) lifetime dream is to race at the "Holy Grail of Speed" the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. There are two problems...he lives in Invercargill, New Zealand and has no money! In the meantime, Burt has tinkered on his 1920 Indian motorcycle all of his life trying to increase its speed and stability. But also must raise money for his trip to America one day by racing locally.

The World's Fastest Indian has a great supporting cast of characters. Paul Rodriquez, Diane Ladd and Saginaw Grant give performances that seem true to its 1960's era. With clichés and laughs abound, Munro's character is very likeable to anyone he encounters.

Burt has pure passion and heart to reach his desired goal even though tons of obstacles are thrown his way. The only passion comparison I can think of comes from the song written and performed by Alicia Keys-"If I Ain't Got You." She sings with passion every single time she sings this song because it is so close to her heart. And it is felt by everyone within earshot!

Sir Anthony Hopkins gives an Academy Award performance portraying Burt Munro. The bonus material gives additional detailed Burt Munro's experiences. This DVD is must see viewing experience for the whole family.

Movie Review: A movie anyone can enjoy
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw a commercial for this movie one day while watching one of the now-common motorcycle builder shows on the Speed channel and knew right away that I was definitely going to go see it.
I told my wife about the flick several times, telling her I wanted to go see it and how it was more than just a movie about bikers (from some review I read on the internet) in the hopes that she would go see it with me. Her answer was pretty much a "yeah right, whatever". She finally relented when I was given some free movie passes at the job, and we had nothing else going on. It was playing at a small theater in town called the Bijou, which caters to the independent film industry. The whole time on the drive out there she was telling me how we were going to waste the free tickets on this film when we could be watching something else, but I explained how these were MY free tickets and I was watching a movie of my choosing. I got my way--this time--and we went to the Bijou, got our seats, and saw the flick.
On our way from the theater to have dinner, she admitted to me that "that was a nice movie"--and that was all. I was right, for once.
Enough said--this is a movie that anyone can enjoy, even those who are not particulary wild about two-wheeled motor vehicles.
