Movie Reviews of The Woman in White

Movie Review: Okay, so it's not like the book.
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, this is not like the book. Granted. They've made a lot of changes; some for obvious reason, some less obvious. If you were hoping to watch this in order to write your term paper without reading the book you are plum out of luck. However, if you have not read the book (which is probably most people) or if you are open minded enough to judge the movie on it's own merit, instead of comparing it to the book, you'll like this. I've read the book, and I enjoy this TV version very much.

It's the gothic story of two half sisters, Marian and Laura. Marian is practical and capable. She also has no money to speak of. Laura is more fragile and fairly helpless. She is an heiress. Laura is engaged to marry Sir Percival Glyde, a really handsome aristocrat, whose lovely manners and attentions to Laura and friendliness to Marian would seem to make him the ideal husband for Laura. However, Marian senses something amiss that she cannot put her finger on--as well she should. Meanwhile a mysterious, ethereal woman clad all in white begings making ghostly appearances, popping up in graveyards, making cryptic comments, then running away. Thus we know we have a good mystery ahead of us.

The mood is cast brilliantly. The music is absolutely haunting. I can't believe other reviewers did not mention the gorgeous music that sets the gothic tone of the program right from the start. The filming locations also add to the mood. People are always wandering around in graveyards. The woman in white hugs and lovingly caresses tombstones. Sir Percivals house is a masterpiece. It's a huge English country house, but is in terrible disrepair with peeling paint and furniture shrouded in ghostly dustcovers. The grounds are elaborate gardens, now neglected and overgrown. Very haunting.

It probably goes without saying that the costumes were fantastic. The BBC always does a good job of that. Sir Percial's beautifully tailored clothing in comparison to the state of his house mirrors the difference between the very handsome Sir Percial the world sees as opposed to the real Sir Perical beneath the surface attractiveness.

I'm completely happy with this DVD, glad I bought it. It's worth watching and rewatching. I wouldn't mind having a CD with the music, it's that good.

No, it's not like the book, but it's very good in it's own right.
