Movie Reviews of The Wiz

Movie Review: AGELESS
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this movie as a child in the early 1980's and I love it now as an adult. I prefer to watch this instead of the Wizard of Oz.

A big reason for me loving this movie is the inspiration of the heartfelt music. It moves me everytime and I have not tired of it and never will. Also I love that it was filmed in New York so that gives it a bit of realism when watching the movie. I also love the costumes and the sets.

This movie to me is a treat for the eyes and the ears especially.

Another great feature about this DVD is that it contains behind the scenes footage about the making of the movie. What a rare treat!

Movie Review: A Classic American Film Musical:
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is one of the things I loved most about being a child. I spent countless Saturday afternoons watching this movie. It is a wonderful take on the Wizard of OZ with an Urban twist that appealed to a whole new generation of movie goers. It also showcased a wonderful array of African-American talent. The moral of the movie is the same as that of the Wizard of Oz made more poignant set against the back drop of Urban decay. The moral is... you don't have to go far to find what you're looking for. The person that you want to be is inside of you already. I've seen it a million times and I'll see it a million more.

Movie Review: Fabulous!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely LOVE this movie!! It's not a REMAKE of The Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland... It's an interpretation of L. Frank Baum's story - with flavor. I would have preferred a younger Dorothy (Stephanie Mills wasn't available I guess), but Diana pulls it off in her own way. Michael, Nipsey, and Ted Ross (Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion) were tops in their roles - they could have given Richard Pryor more depth as the Wiz, but all in all, I've loved this movie since I was 7 in 1978 and I still love it now... matter of fact, I need to order another DVD since the one I have is scratched from playing it so much...

Movie Review: The Magic of "The Wiz"
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this movie. I remember watching it when I was a kid and being absolutely emersed in the film. You see, the first movie I ever remember seeing on the big screen was "The Wizard of Oz". Yes, it was re-release in '76 at the cinema down the road. And to see the same story recreated opened my mind to tolerance of a story, a classic story, retold in a different way. I am always amazed to read or hear "Wizard" fans put it down, when they should embrace it as the same story told in a modern way. They obviously have no tolerance of things different. Hope they dont hear or see "Wicked"??

Movie Review: Really Great Movie That Is Still Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

Like a lot of people, I remember this movie fondly from when I was younger, and this movie is still really fun. Unlike remakes that are made now, this took a classic film and put its own twist to the story. The acting is good, but what really stands out to me is the sets and costumes, especially when they make it to the city. The entire scene when they are watching the people sing about Green, Red and Gold is really cool to watch. The songs are also very memorable and really catchy. Overall, this is a cool movie that can still be enjoyed by anyone, it is really a classic.
