Movie Reviews of The WizMovie Review: Non-diverse and noninclusive = just plain wiz. Summary: 1 StarsI felt very uncomfortable with the lack of diversity of this movie. As a native American, I would have liked to see some native Americans in this film as I feel that every movie should represent the diverse ethnic ratio of its audience. In America we have a myriad of races so every movie's cast should be indicative of that, otherwise it's ethnocentric. When movies are noninclusive, like this one, it makes viewers feel uncomfortable. The following races make up the racial patchwork quilt of American diversity rainbow.
* White alone, 74.7%, or about 215.3 million
* Black American 12.1% or 34.9 million
* Asian American (Includes people from the subcontinent and southeast Asia) 4.3% or 12.5 million,
* American Indian 0.8% or 2.4 million
* Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander 0.1% or 0.4 million
* Some other race 6% or 17.3 million
* Two or more races 1.9% or 5.6 million
Now, it goes without saying that not only should every workplace be representative of these statistics, but every movie and TV show as well, in order for everyone to feel comfortable. It's the compassionate thing to do. Please don't misconstrue that I have anything against afro-Americans, I certainly don't. I don't feel comfortable when I watch all White shows either. I've never seen an all native American show, but I assume I'd feel uncomfortable if I did.
I know only too well the hypocrisy of the whiteocracy. But thanks to this movie I've seen the errors in the blackology of the blackocracy.
Movie Review: An Insult Summary: 1 StarsThe Wizard Of Oz is a king among classic films, and no bonafide movie collection is without it. But the insipid concept of The Wiz, along with horribly dull performances and flat direction, result in a film experience that is without taste and beyond redemption. An insult to African-American culture and movie-goers in general.
Movie Review: A classic for historical reasons, not artistic ones. Summary: 3 StarsThe movie is indicative of the era in which it was produced. But more than that, "The Wiz" was the first real black musical, and for that reason, is dear to the heart of America. Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson are entertaining at best in this movie. Jackson is certainly a better performer overall than Ross.
If this movie, or anything similar to it were to be presented at this time in history, it would be laughably inept. However, since this movie played an important part in bringing black culture into American arts, it deservs it's place in my collection.
Movie Review: Exciting to watch! Summary: 5 StarsThis is my grand daughter's favorite movie..I got her hooked and now , at 4 years old, she is a Wiz expert..She knows every song in the movie!..I had to have watched this movie 3.5 million times!..LOL
Movie Review: THE WIZ--AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN CLASSIC!!!!!!!!! Summary: 5 StarsI remember when I first saw this movie back in the early 1980s when I was a young girl. I adore this movie. Even though I'm 30 years old, I'm still young at heart. Even though I feel that Diana Ross was too old for the role, I still think that this musical was and still is a superb movie. You have to understand something. The reason why I think that The Wiz didn't do so well in the movies back in 1978 was not only because Diana Ross was improperly miscast, but also because white America at the time wasn't ready for African-Americans to remake their favorite all-American whitebread movie that came out in 1939. It was unheard of. If The Wiz was made in the 1990s, it would be very well-received since black movies dominated the 1990s, and blacks were more accepted in white homes in the 1990s, but in 1978, it was a whole different story. They were not ready to have a "nigger" version of "The Wizard Of Oz". It was an insult at the time. Thank God for VHS and DVD. When The Wiz was on VHS and DVD, it was starting to be VERY popular. It was more well-received than when it first hit the theatres in 1978. It became a cult classic, especially within the African-American community. This movie was very spiritual and uplifting that you would think that it's a gospel movie. It sends a motivational message to children, teenagers, and adults that you should never be afraid of acheiving your goals. I love this movie so much. I'm glad that I'm part of the generation that grew up on this movie. I would take this movie over The Wizard of Oz anyday. Let them racist people hate on this movie. The Wiz is here to stay!!!!!!!!
