Movie Review: Give It A Chance Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw The Wiz when I was about fourteen or fifteen. I had never heard of it, but I love The Wizard of Oz, and when I saw The Wiz sitting there on the Blockbuster Video shelf I snapped it up so that I could compare the two.Well, at first I wasn't all that impressed. It's not at all like the Judy Garland picture, and it really deviates from the book...but you know what? I watched it again. And again. And it really grew on me! Diana Ross *was* a bit old to be playing Dorothy...if they were trying to pass her off as a little girl. They changed her age to 24. Michael Jackson was touching as the Scarecrow, a creature who believes he doesn't have a brain, but actually comes up with most of their escape plans when there's danger. Nipsy Russel (spelling?) was convincing as the Tin Man, playing a metal carnival barker who wants a heart so that he can love. And Ted Ross was, I think, the best man they could have picked to play the Cowardly Lion! All I'm saying is to try it. If you don't like it then, you can't say you didn't try! ^_^
Movie Review: Unbelievably Fun Summary: 5 Stars
Boo, hiss to all the naysayers of the one and only 'Wiz'. A few of my friends got together at the DVD store the other night and out of all the available titles settled on this one, primarily for nostaligic reasons. Once we got home and popped it in, well, it was more than just simple sentimentality that carried us off to another world. This musical is awesome. The story is timeless, the songs are unforgettable and the widescreen transfer is excellent. One only wishes for more goodies on the disc. I often scratch my head at why Sidney Lumet directed this, but knowing that he is one of the top five directors ever who understands New York City, it now makes perfect sense. The location shots are amazing, especially with the massive Albert Whitlock visuals. And as hard as it may be to watch Diana Ross play a 24 year old single woman, she achieves it with simple gestures and that pure, honey voice. It's a huge treat to watch this movie and I look forward to repeat viewings.
Movie Review: THE WIZ Summary: 5 Stars
With the events of Michel Jackson and his court case my seven year old wanted to know more about him. I took her back to my memories of him and one of the things I told her about was "THE WIZ". I went to Amazon and they sent it so fast it made my head spin and the price was cheaper than it was listed in Target even with the shipping. My daughter and I watched it and it evoked the same thrilling experience I felt as a young person. We laughed our heads off at Micheal trying to stand for the first time as the scare crow, and the great Tony Ross who played the cowardly lion. My daughter laughed herself silly at Nipsey Russel who played the tin man being crushed by the "Tiny" who was sitting on him. She told me "Micheal Jackson had better stop pulling all of those Newspaper pieces out of his body or everyone is going to know its Micheal Jackson!" To date we sing together every day one of the great great songs. Buy it! It creates memories for generations to come.
Movie Review: Stands The Test Of Time Summary: 5 Stars
The Wiz had all the elements to be an outstanding adaptation to the hit Broadway musical based on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Released nearly 30 years ago, the Academy Award-nominated musical has the cast, the sets and the arrangements by Quincy Jones that makes it magical. The scene from the New York subway station alone shows how all the creative elements were alive in the production.
Much has been written about Diana Ross as Dorothy. Oftentimes I feel it is pointed - for whatever reasons - at Ross the person and not at her performance in the updated version of the character. The same goes for Richard Pryor as the Wiz. Both are great in their roles.
Michael Jackson (Scarecrow), Nipsey Russell (Tin Man) and Ted Ross (Lion) give outstanding performances. And what else can be said about the elegance and style of Lena Horne?
The Wiz has stood the test of time and is a classic.
