Movie Reviews of The WizMovie Review: The Wiz is WIZZEN! Summary: 5 Stars
THERE ARE SPOILERS!
I think the WIZ is wonderful! The music is so well written and it will have you dancing in your sleep!
I really didn't see the WIZ a long time ago...the first time I saw it was September 2006. At first I didn't really know if I was going to like it or not, but I was thrilled to find that I was watching my new favortie musical!
I think the casting is worth a standing ovation!
I think Diana Ross's role of Dorothy was perfect! I don't undersand why so many people on here say that she was too old and she ruined the film! I don't think she was too old and her voice is amazing! She puts so much depth into it. As for her acting, I was suprised at how good it was! I knew she was a singer and had never seen her act before...so I was delighted to see how talented she was! All in all I think Diana Ross brought a freshness to the character of Dorothy and I liked it!
Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow was wonderful! His amazing voice and woderful dancing abilities stun me every time I watch him! I think he gave a youthfulness (he was rather young when he made this movie) and he brought something new to the Scarecrow that is lovable. The Scarecrow's love of literature and famous sayings makes me smile. (Plus he's in two of the best songs of the movie. 'You Can't Win" and "Ease On Down the Road.' If you are Michael Jackson fan like me, you will love him in this!
Nipsy Russle makes a wonderful Tin Man! He has a wonderful smile that just lights up the screen and he brings a new sort of spunk to the Tinman. He has a good voice and as you see in the movie can tap-dance a bit. How he makes the tin man so lovable and almost dashing (as he states in the film)in a funny way is just perfect!
Ted Ross....HAHAHAHAH!! Need we say more? His Cowardly Lion was ADORABLE and he was able to bring a large amount of depth to his character. His singing is VERY nice and he is so funny when he tries to make the lion act brave when we first meet him! I think one of his best moments is in 'Be a Lion' He makes you want to be his friend...some one you want to be with...I just love him in this role.
The music is amazing! All of the songs are classics and I gaurantee that if you like this movie you will actually dream about the dancing and singing ...(I did). Songs like 'Ease On Down the Road', "You Can't Win', Slide Some Oil to me' , 'No Bad News', and Home' will be dancing in your mind and they will get STUCK IN YOUR HEAD!
There are many touching scenes like the song "Be a Lion' or when Dorothy goes home...but I think for me the most touching scene was when the Scarecrow talks for himself: The Scarcrow quotes many, many people throughout the movie and is taking their advice...and at one point even describes himself as a "hopeless failure." But...there is one scene where, right before Dorothy leaves for home the Scarecrow says something. He looks down and says..."Success, fame, and fortune...they're all illusions...the only thing that is real...is the friendship that two can share." Now that may sound cleche to you and to be honest it does to me too...but that's not what gets me-- it is right after, when Dorothy steps forward saying.."That's Beautiful! Who said that?" The Scarecrow looks up at her and says..."I did."
So all in all...I love this musical!
And I hope you do too...

Movie Review: African American Version Summary: 5 Stars
This such a fun movie. I totally enjoyed it. It is a classic and my family has been watching it for years. I love seeing the black Michael.
To the Native American who doesn't like it because she doesn't see herself in it, so what. This is the African American version of the movie. African Americans have a unique culture, style, and way of doing things. Though we are only 12 percent of the population, we dictatate about 85% of American and World popular culture. We are the most excititing, charismatic, and creative people on the planet. I know you know that. This is a fact. You really did not expect to see a movie called the Wiz with non blacks as the primary characters? That would be silly.
I would suggest that you and others who feel as you do create your own version of the the Wizard of Oz. That what we did. It is not a film maker's responsiblity to make you or anyone feel comfortable. A fim maker write movies that speaks to their spirit, and those people who spirits connect with the production support the work. If you expect the world to make you feel comfortable, you are looking for a rude awakening.
As far as you don't feel comfortable watching all black or white shows, that is a personal issue. You need to ask yourself why you are so bothered. I don't have a problem watching all white shows if I find them interesting. However, I enjoy seeing productions most with a cast that looks like me. I bet you would have a different spin if they all look like you. Don't hate! Emulate! Celebrate! Congratulate! Ciao
PS. Folks: I noticed that this poster gave the original Oz a five rating and it has an all white casts. I wonder what dats all about. Hater!?
Movie Review: The Wiz: Outstanding Remake Summary: 5 Stars
Everyone knew of the little girl named Dorothy who was washed away from her home after getting twisted in a twister. Everyone knew that she wanted to come home; but what everyone didn't know was that Dorothy could also be played as a young adult who was a school teacher.
The Wiz was an excellent remake of the fairy tale play The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the movie the Wizard of Oz. It was a fantasy, adventure, and musical directed by Sidney Lumet in 1978. This version of the play added its own style to the storyline by making it more up to date by making New York City the place of Emerald City. The story was already great before they made The Wiz. The main idea was a girl finds friends that all feel like they need something to make them better when in fact they already have it. To top it all off who they were trying to get what they wanted from didn't even have it in him.
The Wiz is a movie every child should watch. It tells a great story and it is a movie that everyone in the family can watch together. Watching this movie, you will enjoy the voices of so many talented stars such as Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. The Wiz will have you laughing, crying, and dancing all at the same time. You will never forget the day when you watch this because it will have you thinking and feeling inspired. What you think you don't have, someone doesn't have it at all. That is the theme of the story. Everyone has flaws.
Some people believe that this was a waste of time and money to make this movie. I disagree. As time goes on things change and I believe it was time for the Wizard of Oz to be remade and "juiced" up a little. I would like to see more and more remade.
Movie Review: Bottom line honey, numero uno! Summary: 5 Stars
THE WIZ is my FAVORITE movie! Every time it came on TV (WGNO 26 New Orleans)I was watching. When I was younger, I paid more attention to the songs and the dancing, but as I got older, I began to pay more attention to what was being said. Due to 20 years of exposure, I can now re-enact the entire movie at will.I was so excited to see THE WIZ on DVD. With most DVDs, you can expect bonus material and easter eggs. This one delivers both. The short documentary about the making of THE WIZ satisfied my almost fanatical longing to know what happened behind the scenes. And being that I was born in the '80s, the theatrical trailer was a nice touch as well. As for the easter egg, it's nothing big, it's just weird. If you put your DVD player on random, before the featurette plays, a picture of red daisies pops up. What that's about, I don't know, but I freaked me out. The only thing I could have asked for was director commentary. Any fan of this film knows that some of the people involved in its making were not too proud of the outcome, and deny any involvement (or choose not to acknowledge it at all). I just would like to know more about the production aspects of the film (just being nosey;). Other than that, I love it!
Movie Review: A classic Summary: 5 Stars
Being AfricanAmerican I grew up on this movie. Theres barely any of my friends who i know who hasnt seen this movie growing up and didnt like it.
People complian abou the scenery. It was what the 1970s? it was made? That how things looked back then. what do you expect.
People complain bou the way the characters looked. Its an adaption of the original Wizard of Oz to better suit the black community i believe.
I loved that movie when i was 5 and younger and i still love it at the age of 18. And the puppet master in teh subway station still gives me the creeps.
I think the dancing and singing is wonderful in this movie. My fav is when dorothy first gets to Oz. and all the kids come off the walls. and when everyone sings Brand new day. Hell.... i like all the songs... i could sit here forever saying what i liked.
I only disliked Diane Ross as dorothy because of her age. I think she was way to old to play dorothy. But she still did a good job.
I kinda wish they would remake The Wiz Now and have new artist in there. Like Usher for the Tin man. Tamyra Gray as dorothy. That would be great.
