Movie Reviews of The Wire - The Complete Second SeasonMovie Review: Better Than the First Season (Which Was Already Very Good) Summary: 5 StarsI think that the second season of The Wire is even better than the first one. Whereas the first season focuses on drug dealing the Baltimore projects, this one focuses mostly on corruption in the Baltimore ports. Everyone always talks about how realistic and multifaceted The Wire is, and this season adds a very interesting dimension in looking at the dying stevedore union. The guys in the stevedore union are all great characters: they get drunk before and after work and consistently steal cargo, yet you can't help but feel some sympathy for them, as the economic decline of Baltimore and its port casts a very dark shadow over their way of life.
The guys from Avon Barksdale's crew are back as well, but the real highlight repeat appearance from season one is Omar, the drug-dealer robber. He makes a priceless appearance in court.
Overall highly recommended!
Movie Review: The Wire Season 2 Summary: 3 StarsAfter seeing season one of The Wire, you may be thinking: "Wow. that
show is cold."
Right you are.
Season one had the area "The Pit",which was a project in Baltimore, MA, where some crazy deals go down(drug selling, beatings, and murders) and great characters like Bodie, Wallace, and my favorite, Omar.
You also meet Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale and D'angelo and Stinkum and the rest of Avons crew and you think: "this next season is going to be soooo cool!"
Well, its not the same, but its still pretty nice.
If you remember the ending of the last show,
McNulty was put on a boat, the team was split up,
and the wire was taken down.
In this season, you get to see what happens with McNulty,
see How Kima Gregges has to deal with her girlfriend, and
how Roland has to deal with his father in law being Stanislaus Valchek, the Major and South Eastern District Commander.
Notice I didn't mention Stringer Bell or Avon yet.
Thats because this particular season deals with a different location.
Its about the docks of Baltimore, where trafficing happens of all sorts of illegal products (drugs, money, etc.).
You meet a family of people known as the Sobotkas: Frank, the Longshoreman's Union leader, Who works with a man known only as
"The Greek", the man who pays Frank for trafficing, and Frank's two
Sons, Nick and Ziggy sobotka, who get involved with "the Greek" themselves
(although Frank has no idea).
Now Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale are still in this season,
along with Omar and the rest, however the show does not
focus on them very much, which leaves you hanging on and wanting more.
The scenes for me with the Barksdale crew for me were few and far between, although some nice stuff goes down, you just wish there was more of it.
Instead, season two focuses on The sobotkas, mostly Nick and Ziggy, who
after a while you stop caring about, although Frank has some good moments.
So what happens is that Frank Sobotka commissions a window for a local church front of dock workers working and helping kids,
while unknowingly, Stanislaus Valchek is also commishioning a window for the same church.
When Vakchek finds that frank Sobotka allready has the space for the stain glass window taken for himself, while Valchek had the
windows he had in mind made allready.
After finding this ou, Valchek calls up Ervin Burrell, the deputy commishioner of operations to "Dig up some dirt" on Frank so he
can have the window for himself.
NOw don't get me wrong, the story start sounds kinda hokey, but the season is not that bad, other than getting tired of Franks two kids.
out of five stars, I'd give it a three: One for just being The Wire,
beacuse it rules, and the other two for the character builds you
get after watching it.
It would get three-and-a-half, but Nick and Ziggy just bring it down.
Movie Review: The Wire - Season 2 Summary: 5 StarsIf you like your Police drama's raw and gritty, this is the show for you. Dominic West is sensational as "McNulty" and is supported by a stellar cast. Once you start watching you can't stop. If you enjoy Police drama in the vein of "The Shield" you will certainly enjoy "The Wire".
Movie Review: Better than the 1st season, but far from being "greatness" Summary: 3 StarsLike the previous season, The Wire: The Complete Second Season builds a terrific premise and a lovingly crafted story with details and intrigue that gets your attention. The season's story about the docks and the falling working class in America is a very interesting premise and story that needs to be seen and heard. However, I feel like the creators create these great scenarios, and stories, but fail to deliver the show it clearly could have been.
As with the last season of the wire, The Wire: The complete second season fails to deliver as a TV show. Despite this however, I must admit the season is definitely stronger than the first with the resonating premise about the working class which easily surpasses the minute details of the last season drug trade. Good stuff, but not great TV exactly.
Movie Review: The Wire 2nd year Summary: 5 StarsThis series keeps getting better each year. Critics are right about it being one of the best on tv.
