Movie Reviews of The Winds of WarMovie Review: Excellent Book Too Excellent Series. Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent adaptation of the book. As originally completed was in excess of
1000 pages, necessitating publishing two books. The Winds of War gives historical
views of the rise of the Third Reich under Hitler.
Casting was good with one possible exception, and you may decide which one.
Action scenes were realistic, and over various countries Hitler invaded,
the bombing of England may not have been shown to the extent, in reality
that took place.
The horrors visited upon the Jewish Population are not shown to the extent they could have been. Everyone deserted the Jews of Europe, including the USA- in my opinion. You will get a flavor of the many ways they were violated, it was worse.
When this was first aired, was unable to watch only small parts am so glad
the DVD were produced.
Great acting in this
Movie Review: One of the best miniseries ever made Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great show, well thought-out and executed. The story is gripping, even if too much time is spent on the self-absorbed Byron and Natalie. The authenticity of characters, places, uniforms and equipment is virtually unmatched by any other film; makes you believe you are witnessing actual events!
I do have a couple of negatives, which took away from the film, but not enough to rate it less than 5 stars. First, I didn't like Gunter Meisner's Hitler. Too thin, too effeminate, not scary enough; he was more like a bad Hitler caricature. Second, and more important, was Ali MacGraw's Natalie. MacGraw is a horrible actress; she made the already unlikable Natalie even more so.
However, the series is still outstanding. As miniseries go, it is right on par with the likes of Pride and Prejudice and Lonesome Dove, two of the other best miniseries ever made.
Movie Review: Great book plot adapted to video Summary: 5 Stars
I had read "The Winds of War" before I saw the miniseries. It is not usual for a movie script to convey what makes a book great but this not the case with "The Winds of War". Robert Mitchum plays a great role as a naval officer who sees himself, due to incredible multi-language capability, serving in naval intelligence in Europe and visiting the hot spots of that continent during the late 1930`s; like Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Soviet Union, United Kingdom ect. His younger son`s role plays out like the young are and how blinded they can be by love. His wife and her uncle roles are well played and show us those people who still think that a river will not be flooded even though they can hear the water rushing down its course. All the roles are well played. A good miniseries.
Movie Review: Winds of War DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I loved the novel "Winds of War" and this mini-series did a reasonable job of telling the story in movie form. I think overall it is a love story set in a fictional historic setting. A man's love for his country, love of family and finally love for a woman.
I think the casting for "Winds of War" was pretty good except for for casting Ali McGraw as a twenty something ingenue. I love Ali McGraw, but she as a bit past the ingenue stage in her life by the time this role came along.
If you like stories with a fictional historic background and romance (Pearl Harbor etc.) you will like this DVD. However, I do recommend reading the "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" first. Oh, I have the DVD for "War and Remembrance" on order too.
Movie Review: Time well spent Summary: 5 Stars
If anyone wants to spend about 15 hours watching something that is really worthwhile, I do recommend Winds of War. I am a Brazilian that in the eighties had a chance to watch just some tapes of the film (not the whole package) and since then the music has been around me and my family, because they are very good. Recently, for some reason, I remembered the film and decided to check the availability in DVD. Bingo, found it at Amazon, ordered, received it in Sao Paulo, Brazil and enjoyed outstanding moments with great entertainment. In the package, it was added some special features describing the make of as well the cast selection, location, etc. and it was another eye opening about the film making art. As we say in Portuguese - Nota 10! (score A+)
