Movie Reviews of The Wind Will Carry Us

Movie Review: Having a wonderful time with time
Summary: 5 Stars

The reviewer Doug Anderson nails this movie when he says: "Most films work by speeding things up and meeting expectations but Kiorastami works by slowing things down and subverting expectations." In fact, time itself is as much the subject of this film as is the plot. Time in The Wind Will Carry Us is "poem" time, with an intense focus on the ambiguity of the situation that makes time pool, and with its thematic repetitions (example: the frequent, frantic (and hilarious) rush to the hillside which is the only place in the village where a cell phone can be answered). Poems seduce us into standing still in real time to receive their illumination, and Kiorastami stands us still inside the beautiful visual for his purposes.

And a poem itself takes us to the heart of the movie's human considerations: the crew member who is the film's central figure descends into the pitch black cellar of a local farmer, and to the milking of a cow in the dark, we hear the poem of the same name as the film, by the Iranian woman poet Forough Farrokhzaad. Caution! If you're tuned in to the poem, this scene may make you weep!

It is a miracle in itself that I found Kiorastami's movie in a local Blockbusters in a small Hudson River Valley town! I want to see all his films. Such truths about our human condition! The director's a master.

Movie Review: Beautiful scenery, slow pace, like life used to be.........
Summary: 5 Stars

I knew nothing about this film, other than what I read on the back of the case, when I rented it this past weekend. I was in the mood for something other than a mainstream "Hollywood" film, and boy did I get my wish! After I "got it" that I was watching something that would not meet my "Americanized expectations" I sat back and truly enjoyed it! Becoming immersed in the pace, my whole day slowed right down and I began to notice small details that I wouldn't ordinarily get from mainstream movies and it was these small details that became immensely interesting and important. I agree with one person's suggestion that each person watching it will take away their own unique "understanding" of it. I feel that there is a reason for every act or decision we make in our life, and that we are personally motivated from within, from a core part of us that "connects" with the great "out there" to get us what we need to grow and move forward. The movie ended in no way that I expected it to, but I loved every moment that I didn't expect....in other words I was still extremely entertained and moved and educated and I would recommend this film highly. It's got a certain something that we find we need only by watching it.

Movie Review: The Feeling of Time
Summary: 5 Stars

Saw the film again after three years, and it`s lyrical beauty was even more obvious than the first time. The title is taken from a poem, and when it is recited, in the darkness of a cave, one can feel all the beauty that surrounds us, even if we don`t always see it.
The Film is about a man who has an inner struggle, but doesn`t want to see it. Only at the end of the film he aknowledges it, though he can`t solve it. The small village he came to, 700 miles away from Teheran, awakens his senses, his lust for life, even though he came looking for death. When in the end the old woman dies, it is totally unexpected, and it doesn`t really matter anymore. Maybe he will stay, maybe he will go, but he is changed.
Life needs living says this film, almost shouts it in your face, but with such warmth of breath, that you go with it. Along with the estranged character the viewer starts to rediscover the world, if he pays attention, and out of the endless flow of time, compassion starts to arise, compassion for the flowers, the trees, the earth, and the people, with all their beauty and shortcomings.
The worst disease is death says a character in the film, when we`ll have to leave this earth. One day, the wind will carry us away.

Movie Review: A very beautiful film.
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film at my university's international cinema. I quickly fell in love with Iranian filmmakers. Kiarostami is the greatest among them. When I saw the Wind Will Carry Us was released on DVD, I nearly threw up. I bought it. Watch this film. Rent it, buy it, whatever. Never show it to a bunch of people or they'll punch you in the face for wasting their time. Watch it alone, or with someone who makes you feel like you're alone. If you can't figure out why it's so good, remind yourself every day when you wake up, that you aren't an imaginative person, and you should check out that job offer for pouring concrete foundations. Kiarostami is shocking in his simplicity and achieves a reality very close to Mahkmalban (I think I spelled that wrong) and other Iranians, without a self-conscious and intentional destruction of the audience's suspension of disbelief. Instead, the story remains intact, albeit a story most will be bored with. I wasn't bored with it. Others weren't bored with it. But invariably, there will be those who are bored to tears, like the reviewer who prefers schmaltzy, if not quaint, Iranian films like Children of Heaven.

Movie Review: A moving, life-confirming, and soulful comedy.
Summary: 5 Stars

It is a very interesting and compelling film that on the surface seems to be one of the most boring ever made. "Wind Will Carry Us" tells the story of Behzad, the documentary director, who travels with his crew from Tehran to the tiny remote village of Siah Dareh where they hope to document an ancient funeral ritual. While there, all they can do is wait for an old lady to die and to hope that it would happen sooner than later. The lady does not seem to hurry to meet her Creator. Nothing much happens with the exception of waiting and repetitions of the same conversations on the cell phone with the constant interruption of calls but the honest and poetic celebration of the world around us shines through every frame of this ode to joy of life. One of my friends, who had recommended the movie to me, suggested that it should not be over- aestheticized and I totally agree. The film's serious political and social metaphors and overtones are undeniable but in its core, it is a moving, life-confirming, and soulful comedy. Watching my first Abbas Kiarastami's movie was a very rewarding experience.
