Movie Reviews of The Whole Wide World

Movie Review: One Who Walked Alone revisted
Summary: 5 Stars

Novalyne Price Ellis' memoir of her association with pulp writer, Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan and other adventure heroes). Played with real warmth by Renee Zellweger and Vincent Donofrio, it tells the story of a friendship between a teacher in a small Texas town during the Depression and a local pulp fiction writer. Of all the books written over the years since his suicide in 1936, Ellis is the only person who actually knew Howard. Written when she was in her 70's, one can hope her memory was sound. Her relationship with Howard -- as well as the promise he held as a writer -- make say, "What might have been." A remarkable little film, even if you know nothing of Robert E. Howard.

Having seen director Dan Ireland's review I went out and bought the earlier Canadian release. On my tv and computer I played the two different versions in synch. There was absolutely NO DIFFERENCE. They matched perfectly at the same playing time with the exact same film. No idea what in the hell he is talking about.

Movie Review: Sometime "Unknown" movies are a joy!
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Whole Wide World" is not available in the UK,on either DVD or VHS, so, having read some of the reviews on this page, I decided to send "across the pond" for it. Thank heavens for multi region DVD players! Having seen Vincent D'Onofrio only in "Law & Order - Criminal Intent" (sorry Vincent, I DID see "Men in Black" et al, but didn't really notice you until "C.I" - oh the shame!! - and the UK are 2 YEARS behind the States with that) what a revelation the movie was. I knew it would be good, but I wasn't expecting it to be as superb as it is. Vincent & Renee's performances were faultless from beginning to end and it looks just beautifull. OK, no car chases or shoot outs for the boys, but it's a love story bewteen an author and a school teacher, so no surprises there then. Just a fabulous movie and I hope one day, it gets shown (OR released)in my country, so that others can see just how good it is. Highly recommended!!

Movie Review: Vincent THE BEST ACTOR EVER!
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie in 2009 to see my favorite actor Vincent in a movie after I got obsessed with him on CI, he felt even more real as Howard, I felt like Vincent was Howard. what a great actor, why he didn't get an Oscar yet?
the movie also is very romantic without being stupid or cheap like most romantic movies, kisses were sudden, passionate.. made me want to go back in time and live better love story with my hubby. I agree there are chapters missing from this movie, may be when they transfered it to DVD .but I watched it with commentary and it seemed continuous ,no interruption.
if somebody has some contact with Vincent would you please tell him that there are people there who are obsessed with him and love him so much and wish him all the best. I hope to see him in more great movies... until then I will keep watching CI and all his movies..

Movie Review: A must buy for Robert E. Howard fans
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was thirteen years old I began reading something other than comic books (I still love those). I started out reading everything that Edgar Rice Burroughs had wrote, and then I did Jules Verne, and the third was Robert E. Howard. If I like an author, I read everything that they wrote and then everything I could about the author (I'm Monk level OCD). Back in the 60s there wasn't much on this great American author, so when I purchased this video a few months ago it was like an empty secret niche in my psyche had been filled. If you are anything like me when it comes to reading, or just want a good wholesome biography, and if you are fans of Vincent D'Onofrio and/or Renée Zellweger, their acting in this is wonderful. BUY IT, WATCH IT, ENJOY! Now I'm off to find Novalyne Price's novel that this was based on!

Movie Review: At long last, it's finally coming out.
Summary: 5 Stars

After pestering numerous people for several years, The Whole Wide World is finally getting its day on DVD, July 29, 2003! Along with a widescreen transfer, a Dolby Digital soundtrack, we have a commentary with Vincent D'Onofrio, our screenwriter, Michael Scott Myers, our composer, Harry Gregson Williams, and our co-star Benjamin Mouton -- who brought the project to me initally. Also, we have an new interview with Renee Zellweger and myself, just filmed last Monday, May 19th. So, if you have only seen our film on television, do yourself a favor, see it this way. It has never been available in such a beautiful condition since the theatrical release. Thank you to all our faithful fans enjoy who have written in and been so generous. For me, this is a dream come true. Finally...
