Movie Reviews of The Whole Wide WorldMovie Review: Good movie, and I'm a Howard fan- Not a drama/romance fan Summary: 5 Stars
One of the things about this movie is that it inevitably attracts some fans of Howard's work who aren't necessarily drawn to romance/drama at all... myself included (I want "Action and Adventure!!"). Howard (along with a few others) created modern sword & sorcery fantasy fiction. His work has been mimicked and paid tribute to countless times. His characters were REAL- lusting, violent, Human... NOT the fairly-tale sexless creations of upright "normal" folks like Tolkien. His characters had both a lust for life and moral superiority, fighting the evils of "civilized" men and standing up for moral ideals. His bad guys were truely horrific (my example would be censored...). Howard was a genius and an interesting character, and this movie helps us to understand him a little. Cheers to Vincent- I think Howard was played very well and with respect.
Because of my high regard for Howard, I truly enjoyed the film. But not only that... The acting was some of the best that I've seen. All of the acting was absolutely first-class and the overall production was great. Because the script was based on "One Who Walked Alone" by Novalyne Price Ellis (the other major character in this movie), one can expect a lot of historical accuracy.
I think this will please both fans of Howard (and Howard's MANY literary children & grandchildren) as well as anyone looking for a great drama/romance flick.
Movie Review: A Wonderful Performance From A Very Wonderful & Talented Man Summary: 5 Stars
Vincent D'Ononfrio proves once again, with his portrayal of Robert E. Howard, that he is one of the best and most underrated actors of our time. It's very rare for an actor to give so great a performance that you want to jump up out of your seat and yell "Yes! Yes! I know exactly what he's talking about!" Mr. D'Onofrio makes you feel every raw emotion of Robert E. Howard and the turmoil of feeling he had to choose between the love for his mother and the love for his girlfriend and the heartbreak of never realizing he could have had both if only he had been given that choice. Instead, his girlfriend, Novalyne Price, played by actress Renee Zellweger, wanted him to choose between the two loves of his life and who herself never realized what she fell in love with once was the very things she wanted to change about Robert; a mistake made by many women then, as well as now.
If you are a Vincent D'Onofrio fan this is a must see movie; if you're not, you soon will be after watching his great performance of Robert E. Howard in this movie, The Whole Wide World. His story telling alone will mesmerize you and bring you to the edge of your seat! You won't be able to walk away from this movie without feeling the emotions of the characters.
Movie Review: Vincent will astonish you Summary: 5 Stars
I won't go over the plot, since that's been done in many other reviews. I would write, though, that there are not enough movies made like this one. Watching it reminds you what you love about films. It is so beautifully done and, more importantly, beautifully paced, that it makes the movies you see after it seem creepy and cheap even if they're made with blockbuster budgets.
Once again, Vincent D'Onofrio shows what acting is all about. He's never false, which would have been easy to be in a role like this one. A lesser actor, or even an average one, would have been tempted to over-do the whole whacky thing. But Vincent makes his character real and touching without being maudlin.
Also of note is the actress playing Vincent's character's mother, Anne Wedgeworth. I don't know that I've seen her in anything else, but here she is perfect. She makes me want to be a better actress. It''s amazing how, in such a small role, she can make such an impression.
Not really relating to the movie, the commentary is priceless and also pretty funny. The highlight of it is the director saying (about Renee), "How lucky were we to have this little passion flower fall into our laps?" Cracks me up every time.
Movie Review: Haunting, heartbreaking and amazing Summary: 5 Stars
The whole wide world is more than a movie. It is something special to be experienced. The film is about the author, Robert E. Howard. Creator of many pulp fiction "yarns" such as Conan the Barbarian and Solomon Kane. The story is brought to life, thanks to the memoirs (upon which the screenplay was based) of Novalyne Price. The movie is beautifully acted by Vincent D'Onofrio (Howard) and Renee Zellweger (Novalyne). In the past three days I have watched this movie 4 times. I have never done that with any movie in my entire life. This is an amazing portrayal of two people who love each other and are unable to fulfill thier love for each other because of the ill health of Howards mother and the fact that Howard is socially inept and unable to let Novalyne close to him.The musical score is masterful and brings out the emotion of the story beautifully. This story was heartbreaking. I cried through it every time I viewed it. It touched off emotions within me that I didn't know were there. Maybe not for everyone but it really struck a chord within me. The whole unrequited love theme was painful to watch and wonderful at the same time.I give it 5 stars.
Movie Review: Hidden Treasure! Summary: 5 Stars
I saw a preview for this movie on another movie that I own. It looked like my kind of thing, something I would love. I looked at it online several times, a little afraid to buy it in case I hated it. Well, I was out shopping one day and decided that I wanted it. If I hated it, that's what I get for buying a movie I have never seen. I LOVED it!! I was already a fan of Renee Zellweger and Vincet D'Onofrio, so I had high hopes. It is one of my favorite romantic movies now. I had never heard of Robert Howard, but I was still facsinated. I enjoy true stories, and being a romantic I love the mushy ones! I am not going to spoil the movie by telling you any of the details, but it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Love, heart break, romance, an electric kissing scene... I was fine until the end, I tend to cry at movies anyway..but Oh My God!! This movie shows the gifts of following your heart and looking at who people are on the inside. Everyone has someone destined to love them. I was so moved, I think every woman should watch this movie.
