Movie Reviews of The Who: Who's NextMovie Review: Worth a watch for even a casual Who fan Summary: 5 Stars
Most agree that Who's Next is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. That is reason enough to get this DVD. But it is much more than that if you're even a casual Who fan. If you have been singing "Teenage Wasteland" because you were (or are) a teenager that gets wasted, then check out Pete Townshend explaining the real meaning behind the song Baba O'Riley in this DVD. Or see Pete show how he created the synthesizer sounds for Won't Get Fooled Again - on the original equipment he used back in 1971! He also gives unique insight on how the album was created from his "Lifehouse" concept.
As a Who fan, I was actually surprised at how much insight both Pete and Roger offered in this DVD.
Good prices on used copies are well worth it too.
Movie Review: Who's Best Summary: 5 Stars
The idea behind the Classic Albums series that this DVD is a part of, is to illuminate the development and recording of truly memorable albums. Albums that will stand the test of time. Who's Next is unquestionably one of those albums. This documentary provides insight into the objective Pete Townsend was attempting to attain with his aborted Lifehouse project. It reveals how the music on Who's Next is indebted to his overreaching attempt to create something bigger than the Who were capable of. Along the way we see and hear great performances by the Who at their peak and acoustic versions of classic songs bring new depth to a master work. The sound is spectacular. I wish the whole album were on here with DVD fidelity.
Movie Review: ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER RECORDED Summary: 5 Stars
At 13 yrs.old, Christmas of 1971, my grandmother got me the album as a present from my wish list. As the years have passed I've rebought on cassette, 8 track, 2 CD upgrades to the Deluxe Edition, and now the DVD. I've turned countless friends on to the album, including my son, and am working on my grandson. Every track shines. Not a loser in the bunch. But then, the original lineup never disappointed in my opinion. Recommend highly. Love when they disect an album at the mixing board !
Movie Review: Excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD is EXCELLENT! It not only features video clips of The Who doing material from the album, but it also features clips of how Pete Townshend put together a lot of the album. Also, there is some great footage about Keith Moon towards the end.
Movie Review: Awesome for true Who fans! Summary: 4 Stars
I loved this documentary because I grew up hearing these songs blaring from my brother's bedroom, and it's awesome to hear Pete Townshend and all the others discussing the concept behind this album. I was glued to the television while watching this DVD; I didn't want to miss a word, especially when Pete was talking. But then, I'm an aging musician myself, and I miss the old-school days when bands were striving to be different and tried to create something truly new and world-changing. ;-)
