Movie Reviews of The Whip and the Body

Movie Review: fantastic bava, bad release
Summary: 4 Stars

One of Mario Bavas best films since the blacks, the onhly problem is the so advertised "european" version doesnt even credit bava for the movie.they claim a like John mold for the director. I hate american arrogance, but anyways the transfer is decent, and the sound works, if u can get over the lies at the beggining( any true giallo fan hates to see any american names in the credits)

Movie Review: Good Ghost Story
Summary: 4 Stars

The restoration of this movie was fantastic, vivid colors and a crisp picture. Although somewhat horrific, I think i would call this more of a mystery than a horror picture. Im reminded of the Hammer films, but the subdued colors and use of shadows are one hundred percent Bava. Not as scary as Black Sunday (what movie is?) but in its own way a pretty good movie, worth a look.

Movie Review: Great ambiance but dreadfully boring
Summary: 3 Stars

When I told my dad that I purchased this film he said: "you are buying a movie that they showed in drive-ins during the sixties to teenagers who weren't paying attention" This makes alot of sense because it is a beautiful masterwork of ambiance and mood but so incredibly slow and protracted that it's hard to watch the whole way through without keeping one eye on the screen and the other on the fast forward button of the remote. It actually has a great story and plot but the overacting (partly due to dubbing) makes it too silly to be frightening and too overtly suspensful to raise goosebumps. Nevertheless it is a beautifly shot picture. Go ride Pirates of the Carribean at Disneyline if you want to see what great lighting and sets can do. This movie is worth watching and owning on that merit alone.

Movie Review: It's preverse
Summary: 3 Stars

I have read a lot about this film, mostly that it was impossible to see a version that was the original director's vision. Now you can. It's a ghost story with a lot of whipping. Dalia Lavi is engagned to one guy but has a thing for Christopher Lee. His sadistic treatment of her is sexually exciting and you can tell in the film. The movie is interesting and is more of a ghost story than a horror film. The sado-masochistic stuff isn't for me, but it doesn't overpower the film.

Movie Review: Whip Me Til I'm Dead- A Real Bore
Summary: 2 Stars

I was expecting to see a decent film by Bava, but after having seen about 5 of his films, I can only guess that is he is a very good stylist but he lacks the capability to engage us with a story or to even scare us. Most of his films are gorgeous to behold but they are vapid and have no story, this film is just like all the rest.

There is no point to any of it, there is no plot and hardly any suspense, suffice it to say it might be interesting for a 12 year old horror goof but to an adult, its quite tedious. Chris Lee is rather banal also, he doesn't do much and it seems that he dubbed his own voice in the studio, most of the cast is rather dull also, supposedly playing some ancient noble family, they look more like 1960's mop heads and morons who were on too much acid. The dialogue, what there is, is crude, probably written by a drunk Italian because there are so many mistakes, one example was when Lee was whipping the lady on the beach and she says, "I can't have more ice cream!"

So, I would suggest renting "Planet of the Vampires" because that is more enjoyable than this waste. Interesting character to note was "Lesmo", dubbed as the "European Peter Lorre" who doesn't have much in the way of presence or acting skills and he looks like a cross between a frog and a midget.
