Movie Reviews of The WesternerMovie Review: Walter Brennan Stole the Show Summary: 5 Stars
Walter Brennan won his third Oscar for best supporting actor playing the part of "Judge" Roy Bean in The Westerner. He was made for this part like Vivien Leigh was made to play Scarlet. Anyone who remembers Brennan as "Grandpa" in The Real McCoys and in lesser roles over the years, and has any interest in the early westerns, will be captivated by Brennan's portrayal of this dusty, hard-drinking, straight-talking, wild and wooly Texas "judge," who runs a kangaroo court, where shooting a steer is a hanging offense and getting caught sober after sundown will get you arrested for disorderly conduct. Of course all the rules change if you're an acquaintance of Lily Lantry, the actress Bean has never seen in the flesh but is completely under his skin. Gary Cooper has the lead role in this movie as Cole Harden, who escapes the noose Bean has fitted for him when he puts two and two together and comes up with a story about Lily that Bean cannot resist pursuing, but needs Harden to do it. At the same time, battling cattlemen and farmers "tomato-kissers" fill out the storyline. As big a star as Cooper was, deservedly so, he is eclipsed by Walter Brennan in this film.
Movie Review: the NEW 2008 version is MUCH MUCH better than the OOP HBO issue! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not going to review this dead bang CLASSIC...Gary Cooper at his prime, William Wyler at his....nuff said. What I am going to inform everybody is I just viewed the new MGM 2008 DVD against my long out of print HBO copy that I paid a fortune for and the differences are striking...I thought the original DVD was very good for its age...a bit grainy but with some good contrast and bite...but this new DVD looks like a print right off the original negative!!!! I can't believe they are not touting the amazing improvement but the first DVD was early in the DVD era and was obviously in retrospect a transfer from an inferior source. the verdict..If you are a classic film or western fan or a fan of Gary Coopers...this WILL be the best $10 you EVER spent!!! Yee Haaa!
Movie Review: Finally a restored version of this film has been released. Summary: 5 Stars
I just viewed this movie on a HD Panasonic 42 inch TV upscaled to HD and the picture is a good 50 times better than the the current Asian import version I own. The picture is prestine and one of the rare cases where MGM must have done a complete restoration on a Samuel Goldwyn title. There is virtually no scratches or dust on the picture. It is also reasonably sharp and has perfect brightness and contrast. I would compare it to Image's restored original twilight zone's for picture quality. I have compared it to the asian import in upscale HD mode and the asian import version was very dark, blurry and had a great deal of ghosting around people's faces and pretty much was horrible in all areas. This is the version to get for sure.
Movie Review: A great, classic western Summary: 5 Stars
Of the great Hollywood westerns, "The Westerner" is not often mentioned. It captures the spirit of the old west with great accuracy and humor. One may question the plot line, but Judge Roy Bean was indeed infatuated with the Jersey Lilly. The chemistry between Cooper and Brennen is palpable and the scene where they wake up in bed together (not in any way gay) is one of the funniest in film history. As I recall, Brennen won an Oscar for his role in this film. It is perhaps his finest role and also one of Cooper's.
This is good wholesome, innocent fun with a touch of dark humor. It is one of my absolute favorites. If you like this one, also check out "Along Came Jones," also with Gary Cooper.
Movie Review: 5 reasons why The Westerner is great Summary: 5 Stars
1)Toland's cinemeotography is the best
2)Walter Brennon is the best, funniest, most unrealistic Judge Roy Bean,to pass out with an Ace up his sleeve..
3)Gary Cooper is surrounded by the an awesome cast of of great character actors, the likes of which you won't see again..
4)These guys are mostly gone, their acting is so good, you realize,to late, that actors like these are no longer available..
5)The director tells his story from a script,it fits together puzzlelike,a part of a genre thst is so American,it is hurtful to watch it..
