Movie Reviews of The Way We Live NowMovie Review: A period piece delight Summary: 4 Stars
Set in England in the late 1800's, this delightful series intertwines the lives of the Carbury family and the Melmonts. Mrs. Carbury is on the brink of ruin because her deceased husband did not leave her enough to thrive and her only hope is for her scoundrel of a son to marry a wealthy woman or alternatively for her beautiful daughter to marry her cousin. The Melmont's have just arrived in London from Vienna and purportedly have wealth. The Melmont daughter is attracted to the worthless Carbury son and the story begins to spin its web. The acting in this series is exceptional and the screenplay is tightly woven so that each episode ends on a cliff hanger. It is an enjoyable dvd for light hearted entertainment.
Movie Review: The Way TV Should Be Summary: 4 Stars
I am sure that I am not the only person out there who has become quite mystified as to what passes as quality television these days.Due to my dismay, I started looking into BBC DVD's,and WOW! I actually look forward to evenings in front of the television again. The Way We Live Now is a winner. Story line held my interest, the lush scenery, wardrobes, the superb acting of these immensely talented actors......I hated to see it end.BBC has a handle on how to produce quality, classy series, that are worthy of investing both your time, and money into.I want to see programming worthy of my time.So should you! With BBC,you can be rest assured your intelligence will not be insulted.Thank you BBC!
Movie Review: Very faithful spirited adaptation Summary: 4 Stars
This series is an amazing adaptation of Trollope's novel, yet at the same time speaks to a contemporary audience - the bubble stock scam, investors' greed and gullibility and the extreme corporate coruption, coupled with unreal ambition are maybe a little too typical of much we have seen in recent years. The last episode is the weakest and the ending seems almost perfunctory, but all in all, a highly enjoyable series.
Movie Review: Engrossing little soap opera Summary: 4 Stars
This was a very entertaining little soap opera. Costumes and sets were fantastic. Plot was breezily complicated. Entire cast is great, especially Matthew MacFadyen, who is deliciously sleazy--but Miranda Otto? WORST SOUTHERN ACCENT EVER. I laughed out loud (and not in a good way) every time she opened her mouth.
Movie Review: Great Drama! Summary: 4 Stars
Suchet gives a great performance as the cunning, Melmotte who's out to swindle an unsuspecting town into doing his bidding while chasing his daughter for his supposed fortune. The Way We Live Now is full of drama, scandal and intrigue that kept me glued to my seat to see the conclusion of the whole matter.
