Movie Reviews of The War WagonMovie Review: Look at those horses! What are they dragging? Summary: 5 Stars
The War Wagon is perhaps my favorite western and favorite Duke movie. There is plenty of action, some good humor, and an interesting, believable plot. Taw Jackson (Wayne) is a rancher just released from prison. He wants revenge on the man named Mr. Pierce, who sent him there and stole his ranch because it had gold on it. Wayne teams up with Lomax (Kirk Douglas) who plays a gunfighting womanizer. Together they team up with other misfits and an Indian tribe in an attempt to rob an old western version of an armored car, The War Wagon.
The other characters are Levi Walking Bear, a crazy Indian who has learned to live in a White Man's world. Billy, a drunk who is an expert with dynomite and nitro glycerine, and a crazy old man who drives Mr. Pierces flour wagons. I say he is crazy because anyone who would pull a knife with a rifle pointed at him is a little off his rocker. He 'owns' a pretty hot blonde too, he got her for 20 dollars and a horse.
Well they get the wagon, but not all the booty. You;ll have to watch and see who gets the majority of the gold, and maybe deservedly so.
Great moments are as follows, and always remember, in a tight spot, offer an enraged Indian a swig of nitro glycerine.
Lomax :"Mine hit the ground first"
Taw: "Mine was taller"
Taw "The shells belong to him. You tell him he can come get them anytime"
Lomax "You've been working saloons too long"
Taw "Me neither, prescious!"
Mr. Pierce "INDIANS DON'T BLOW BRIDGES!!!"
Billy "I'm gonna buy this place!"
Movie Review: "look at that war wagon roll" Summary: 5 Stars
i love john wayne movies and this one is a good one. with friend kirk douglas, wayne plays taw jackson a man sent to prison by bruce cabot for a crime he didn't commit and cabot stole waynes land and his gold mine to boot. now wayne is out and wants payback and the gold. douglas is lomax the gunman who cabot wants to hire to kill wayne, but wayne gets to him first and they become parters in an atempt to rob one of cabots gold shipments in the title wagon. and what a wagon, its armor plated, has a gatlin gun mounted on it and has 12 gunman on horse back riding beside it.this is a very action packed western that has humor to spare and wayne and douglas look to be having the time of their lives together and it just makes the movie pop off the screen with energy. my boys watch this one with me and i've caught them outside playing like they are in the movie, so this is one of the best reasons i have to add this great western to the collection.

With their gang, they plan to rob the war wagon at its weakest point in the route it travels.
Movie Review: Entertaining comedy western Summary: 5 Stars
The War Wagon is a good comedy western starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglass as two men attempting to steal a shipment of gold. Wayne stars as Taw Jackson, a man recently released from prison after being framed, who wants to get revenge on the man who put him in jail(Bruce Cabot). Kirk Douglass is Lomax, Wayne's greedy, cocky partner. These two are perfect together as they try and figure out how to rob the "war wagon." Their dialogue is sharp and cutting with insults being handed back and forth. The movie is very entertaining to watch. Excellent cast backing up Wayne and Douglass including Howard Keel as Levi Walking Bear. There is enough action and humor for everybody in this western. DVD presentation is good in widescreen with a trailer included even though it is a little pricey. Well worth it for Duke fans!
Movie Review: Sheriff.....Taw Jackson's back in town!........ Summary: 5 Stars
This is just a rollicking fun western. From the start with the improbable iron wagon being pulled by 3 teams of horses, with the Ed Ames song playing in the background, you know your in for a treat. Howard Keel plays Levi Walking Bear to comic perfection and Kirk Douglas is great as the slick, always a hair in place, gambler Lomax. Pulled into this is a dynamiter, Robert Walker Jr., as Billy. Together they go after the War Wagon and the gold inside. John Wayne's friend Bruce Cabot plays the villian, Frank Pierce.
Oh sure the idea of putting a Gatling Gun inside an iron wagon and expecting to shoot it, let alone hit anything, is highly improbable..not to say deafening...but this movie makes it work. This is the kind of movie that is fun to watch and well worth adding to your western collection.
