Movie Reviews of The Visual Bible - MatthewMovie Review: the impact... to be continued.... :) Summary: 5 Stars
I got this movie when i was 12 years old.. i am now 19 and i still feel the impact of this movie in my life. I am studying Biblical studies and theatre in college right now, and I believe this is by far the best portrayal of Christ in the New Testament. I still watch parts of these movies from time to time and it never fails to reignite a child-like love and adoration for the Lord.
I feel i have a very high and very conservative view of God and His holiness, and this portrayal is not at all blasphemous in my opinion and knowledge of Scripture. It is real and applicable to our life today, unlike the Gospel of John film which i thought had a very strong medieval and stoic feel to it. As mentioned before, it shows a range of very real and very righteous emotions in the portrayal of Jesus, from grace to the forgotten and repentant, and holy anger toward the hypocritical religious leaders.
I will admit this movie is radical in comparison to others, but i feel that is it's strongest point. In order to feel it's full effect, you must lay down your pre-concieved notions and see it with a child-like faith, but then again, isn't that what faith in the Christ of the Bible is all about?
I think it's a frightening thing when we believe so strongly in the portrait we have painted of Christ for ourselves, that we dismiss anything to the contrary, even IF IT IS in line with what we find in Scripture, just because it is not comfortable to us. Let's remember that He came as fully God and fully man, and while preaching truth, and living a perfect and sinless life, He also loved on sinners, many of whom would not recieve a second glance from many churches today.
If for no other reason, i love this film because it is obvious that Jesus is portrayed by a man who knows the Character He is portraying personally. What better way to take on the likeness of the character you must portray, than to know them personally, know their heart, and even be given the "same mind." (1 Corinthians 2:15-17) I think this is a trait that lacks severely in most "Jesus actors."
I recommend the movie, and also the books written by Bruce Marchiano, the actor who portrayed Jesus, even perhaps before seeing the film, as it gives even more depth to what you see there. Also the music from the film is beautiful.
It should be obvious that i believe strongly in this film if even after 7 years of recieving it, i still feel the desire to right a positive review for it... does that tell you anything? :)
Movie Review: Simply the best portrayal I've ever seen... Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this visual gospel well over 10 years ago when there wasn't a DVD available and the price was between $80-$100. We've given copies of this video to many people as gifts simply because we think it is the best depiction of a real, human Jesus as he would have been. Bruce Marchiano portrays the character beautifully and the range of emotions he shows and he pulls from the viewer is amazing. Whenever I watch his portrayal of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and the rest of the events after that, it drives home the point that this Jesus who laughed and was totally human also felt all of the pain and despair that he endured. Did he do it willingly? I think there were times of doubt and despair but the character shows believable glimpses of doubt supported by incredible faith. I'm shocked at some of the bad reviews listed. In fact, I wish I could give this video 10 stars. Without a doubt this is the most inspiring video I have ever seen in my life. I hope and pray it never goes out of print and I wish more people would open up their minds to a Jesus who is real, who smiles, who gets hungry and dirty, and a person who has feelings just like us. After all he was fully God and fully man. The Jesus in this video is not smokin' anything as one poor reviewer indicated. Quite the contrary. It is sad to know that people are close minded and judgmental and cannot open their minds to viewing such a believable human portrayal of a miracle man who walked the earth. I'm completely amazed and feel unbelievably blessed that we can watch a video this interesting, mesmerizing, and engrossing that is "WORD FOR WORD" from the Bible. I think the directors and producers of this video had an inspired vision to create an artistic piece that is masterful at showing the time period, how the word was written and passed down from generation to generation, and gives the viewer a much more accurate and realistic time-frame of how Jesus taught the disciples everything He did. This is the best money you'll ever spend.
Movie Review: The best Jesus movie I've seen Summary: 5 Stars
If you find "The Greatest Story Ever Told" believable, where Jesus speaks in rich baratone at people, not to people; if you think that Yeshua was always frowning or serious; if you have trouble thinking of the Son of Man dumping a bucket of cold water over Peter's head in laughter, then you might not like how this move portrays Our Christ. Looking at some of the reviews here I'm surprised that people can't see Jesus smiling. If it is true that he was a man, then he must have had some fun besides just healing the sick. And as it's written that he did not have characteristics that drew people to him (he wasn't glamourous, wasn't flashy, probably didn't even have "the look you want to know better"), the scriptures seem to point us to someone who was pretty ordinary in appearance, but who performed extraordinary acts of kindness for the dregs of society. Remember, he did not call the rightous, but sinners. Speaking as a seasoned sinner myself, I wouldn't listen to a barratone who spoke at me, not to me. I wouldn't believe he could have much capacity for compassion if he was just another "purdy boy". And I wouldn't take him seriously if he never smiled. Whereas one reviewer said he found the Gospel of John more realistic, I found that version far less realistic because he was too glamourous, too suave, and besides, he had a perm. My vote is for The Gospel according to Matthew. I have watched this move well over two dozen times and I'm still learning from it. And it's also amazing to me how the producers could make the book seem coheriant without interjecting a single additional word not in the NIV.
Movie Review: The Gospel Movie Ever! Summary: 5 Stars
As given in my previous review ("The Perfect Stranger"), This Jesus is the best Christian Epic Ever!!!
It does something revolutionary/Original... It takes one Gospel and completely dramatizes it from the first to the last verse. No other Film Group except Visual Bible has done this. This style/format presents/proves the Historical Jesus of Bethlehem/Nazareth as History-Biography -- As Fact, not Fiction!
Because most of the movies are not Bible-based or semi-Bible based, a hint of fantasy/fiction/mystic elements is imputed onto the "Jesus character" in which the audience walks out of the Theatre being Entertained, not Educated/Edified/Exhorted. They are cheated of the Real
Jesus -- Jesus of Nazareth/Bethlehem.
The 4-hour epic is a must for all who claim Jesus as their God, Lord, and Savior. My Christian School and Sunday School classes use it constantly when doing any exegetical/expository preaching (verse-by-verse Bible Study).
May the Godhead bless you when you purchase/rent/show to others this film

Movie Review: Matthew Summary: 5 Stars
This is the most amazing and enlightening "movies" that depicts the life of Jesus!
Whether you like the NIV version of the Bible or not, this video makes the content flow as though it was a "made for TV" mini-series. Every word spoken is from the NIV (I checked!) yet vividly presents the story from the view of the apostle Matthew.
Originally on VHS tape (first released in 1995) I had worn out my copy and I was delighted to have found it on DVD. I use it as a "witnessing tool" for it brings out the Gospel message so clearly.
Bruce Marchiano makes the character of Jesus so realistic, so "human". During the filming in the Middle East, several non-Christian crew members were so moved that they accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior while making the film!
Although "out of production" now, I was able to find it on Amazon (new, sealed package).
I would recommend this video for YOUR family and friends - it will change you!
