Movie Review: Old fashioned buckle&swash with a great musical score

The kind of exciting adventure movie they dont make any more, full of enjoyable hokum and happily hammy performances. Plus Kirk Douglas gets his eye plucked out by a bird, or something. Note the raptuous score by the greatly underrated Italian composer Mario Nascimbene -- stay tuned past the ending & you'll hear a reprise of it under the animated closing credits. What Fidler on the Roof is to Jews, this film is to Scandanavians. My Swedish/American husband introduced me to it on our first date. I'm part Swedish, too, and we had a wonderful first date that developed into marriage. All happy couples remember their first date. We've seen this film many times since and still love it. I saw this film as a jr. high schooler and thought it was great. It still is! Director Richard Fleischer and Kirk Douglas were a great combo (also another of my favorites, Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". The picture quality is superb showing off the beautiful Norweigian fjords and the DVD has a very comprehensive 'making of' bonus feature.Movie Review: One of the most perfect films ever made

For what it tries to do, The Vikings succeeds on every level. I never tire of this film and usually watch it once a year or so. The music is wonderful, the scenary is breathtaking and the acting superb. Sure, it is a simple action film, but the ensemble cast plays it wonderfully. Just as good as in 1958 but much, much more appreciated. Great transfer to DVD! Excellent music! Rousing well-filmed swordfight followed by Viking funeral at movie's end. If only 'Gladiator' had been half as good.
