Movie Reviews of The Vikings

Movie Review: Take Your Magic Elsewhere, Holy Man
Summary: 5 Stars

You might pause before watching a movie featuring Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis and Ernest Borgnine as Vikings... I know I did before my old pal Sean MacFalls turned me on to this fabulous little epic. This movie has it all: wicked royalty, a damsel in distress, castles to be stormed, long boats cruising through stunning widescreen fjords, and a rousing, majestic score. Kirk Douglas is especially fine as the good/bad protagonist (he was on the career streak that started with "Lust for Life" and ended with his beautiful work in "Strangers When We Meet"). Whether shrugging off a torn-out eye or skipping across the oars of a Viking ship, he does what only a great actor can: he shows the nobility in savagery and makes you laugh along with him. A great, great movie.

Movie Review: The Axes of Evil
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Vikings" is one of a handful of all-time favorite movies. It was a staple of the 10:30 Saturday night movies of the 1960s, and I never missed it! Finally, I have it on DVD, and it's magnificent.

The final conflict between the Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis characters on the castle's stone flanks is one of the most memorable scenes in cinema. However, my favorite scene is the brief one in which Kirk Douglas jumps across the chasm to the raised drawbridge and climbs the battle axes that have been flung into its wood.

"The Vikings" is a visual masterpiece, and it's great fun to watch. It has jumped across the late night TV chasm from the big screen (1958) to DVD (2002), and I'm forever grateful!

Movie Review: Outstanding!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the greatest Saturday afternoon movie that was ever made (even though I saw it on a Saturday night in 1958 when I was nine years old). From the fascinating prologue narrated by Orson Welles to the climatic fight between Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis, "The Vikings" will engage and entertain you. "The Vikings" was beautifully shot on location by Jack Cardiff who received an Academy Award in 2001 for life-time achievemnet in cinematography. The beautiful music score is heroic and elegiac. The acting is slightly over-the-top, but the wonderful cast (Ernest Borgnine, Frank Thring, James Donald, and Janet Leigh) makes it all fun. I have this film on VHS and still love it today.

Movie Review: Excellent transfer to DVD--anamorphic widescreen
Summary: 5 Stars

This review refers to the 2002 DVD edition of "The Vikings". In addition to being a well crafted and engaging epic, the transfer of the movie to DVD is surprisingly good. This 1958 film looks fantastic! The picture is sharp and clear and the colors are vivid and accurate. The picture and sound viewed on my 46-inch Samsung high definition LCD television (played on a Toshiba 1080p HD DVD player) are simply stunning. The picture is nearly high-definition in quality. A nice surprise for a 50-year old movie! The format is anamorphic widescreen (and enhanced for 16x9 large screen TVs), so the image fills the entire screen. Highly recommended!

Movie Review: "Odin! Odin! Bring the wind and turn the tide!"
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember as a small child watching this magnificent epic adventure on the big screen at Rockefeller Center in New York, in 1958. The music in this film is truly magnificent and effectively reinforces the audience's emotional reactions to dramatic scenes. Three musical high points are particularly potent. First, when a Viking utilizes a mammoth tusk as a horn to welcome returning warriors; next: when a Valkarie's voice heralds the coming of the North Wind to save an important character; and finally, when an unseen choir sings the triumphant welcome of another important character into heavenly Valhalla.
