Movie Reviews of The Vikings

Movie Review: Vikings with American accents
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this movie on the big screen when it first came out. The tune that plays in the background and on the large Viking horn stuck with me for years. Since this as a young lad this has always been my first impression of Vikings.

As the story unfolds you get the impression that the Vikings are the civilized people and the English are the barbarians. The Vikings sound American and the English sound, well English. The story contains all the elements of a tragic play. Relatives that do not know they are and rivalry for beauty (Janet Leigh). Pay close attention to the fact that there is only one scene with blood in it and that is when a hawk attacks Einar. There is absolutely no more blood so doesn't look for it. There are plenty of scary moments and magic and "stay in the car" type scenes. All in all you will be impressed.

The DVD, being economical, you would not expect any DVD goodies (Extras); However there is a Photo gallery with audio commentary by Director Richard Fleischer. That makes the movie more enjoyable. He explains some thing about the technical end of the movie and the actors' lives during the movie. Most of all he tried to make the Vikings themselves look as authentic as possible.

Movie Review: Should be considered a classic
Summary: 5 Stars

It was a time when the Vikings rampaged across Europe, taking what they wanted and letting no one stand in their way. But the slave, Eric (played by Tony Curtis), has a secret, a secret that will cause men to play games of power for very great stakes indeed. But if Eric is one pole that this crisis turns on, the other is Morgan (Janet Leigh), a woman so beautiful that men will do anything to possess her.

OK, that's probably a pretty poor introduction. This is a great movie. The makers set out to make the movie as realistic as possible; eschewing any horned-helmets and whatnot, and the result is a breathtaking movie that is a real experience to watch. Also, the story is great, with lots of great adventure and romance. My fifteen-year-old son and I sat down to watch this movie, and he enjoyed it as much as I did.

Yeah, this is a great movie, one that should be considered a classic. If you like action/adventure movies, then you will like this one. And, if you like historical fiction, especially Viking fiction, then you will love this movie. I think that this is a great movie, and I do not hesitate to recommend it to everyone!

Movie Review: Gorgeous Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

It was hard choosing between four and five stars, because while this isn't a perfect movie, it's absolutely perfect for what it is: a glorious Saturday matinee experience that's as much fun now as it was when it inspired all the neighborhood kids to play Vikings. It's a movie that feeds the imagination, whether you're a child imagining you're dancing on the oars, or an adult imagining... well, it's still a very sexy movie, from an era that didn't show all but definitely knew the meaning of the word "lusty." (Einar may not be politically correct, but... wow!) The characters are larger than life; the cinematography brilliant (capturing not just the gorgeous shots of the fjords, but the eery menace of Viking ships emerging from the fog, the moonlit tidal pool, and a funeral to die for); and the music so heart-stoppingly beautiful I have never forgotten it. And the silliness (not to mention Janet Leigh's bodice) is just part of the fun, so don't worry about the 13th-century castle. (What would that climactic duel have been atop a mere wooden palisade?) Just sit back and enjoy it to the hilt!

Movie Review: Viking Funerals are Pretty Cool
Summary: 5 Stars

This is what entertainment's all about! Directed by (and starring) Kirk Douglas, this movie released in 1958. Ernest Borgnine is a Viking king, compelling in this rude/crude role, and Kirk is his son. A viking's life is active, raping and pillaging, and partying at night. I read somewhere that this film was tops in the box office for the 1950's, and I'd believe it.

Tony Curtis believes he's a slave. Can't imagine a better lookin' slave, rivaled only by his other slave role in Spartacus! Tony and Kirk vie for the affections of Janet Leigh (who married Tony in real life), Tony in a more endearing manner and Kirk with the grace of a wild boar in the woods.

The battles are great, the ship maneuverings fascinating, the scene with the hawk still haunts me. I've never forgotten the music either. Definitely one to add to a must-be-viewed list.

Movie Review: Blimey! It's the Vikings!
Summary: 5 Stars

As many reviewers have observed, the best reaction to this movie is to sit back and enjoy it. Douglas and Borgnine are just great as comic-strip Vikings. Why Tony Curtis, perfect as "the cookie full of arsenic" in The Sweet Smell of Success, was ever thought suitable to play a slave-boy in sword epics like this and Spartacus, completely beats me. Janet Leigh, perfect in Psycho, is a little too 20th century for all this more general kind of blood and guts, but everything else is terrific, and most of it is almost authentic. A lot of the dialogue is superb: "I'm a lady, and I just won't row a boat to save my life". I can't remember the exact words. The scene where the wimpy Anglo-Saxon peasants vamoose the fields, crying "It's the Vikings, It's the Vikings" has remained memorable for 45 years. The DVD quality is excellent.
