Movie Reviews of The Untold StoriesMovie Review: The Next Nirvana
Granted, Nirvana has been just about talked to death but this DVD seems to be scraping the bottom of the barrel a little bit with regards to it's interview subjects. Except for a few notables (Slim Moon, Jack Endino, Jeff Burlingame) who do know what they're talking about and offer some insight, most of the people interviewed for this documentary are of dubious distinction. The pace drags a bit and some of the quality seems less than professional. Despite these problems I found myself enjoying this DVD and it did offer up a few worthwhile nuggets of Nirvana related trivia. There are some interesting stories form Kurt's past and the bands rise to fame, some good footage and pictures (with a lot of filler) but most notably... NO NIRVANA MUSIC!! This turned out to be okay though because about a third of the music used was from a band that was so good it's almost annoying. Several wonderful songs and indeed most of the source music on this DVD can be tracked back to an Ohio band called Earwig, who do a damn fine job of standing in for Nirvana. Those are big shoes to fill but they are an original indie band with a great singer, not your average grunge clone. It's a good thing that Earwig's website is listed in the credits, because they are not given mention beyond just hearing their songs. Finding this new band was my biggest reward for buying this DVD but I must say that it was worth it. I love Nirvana and I always will, but why does the narrator have an overblown British accent? The band was from Seattle, right? Overall, I've seen most of this footage before, but it's worth it just for the new music (Earwig).
