Movie Reviews of The Unknown Marx BrothersMovie Review: If you're an aspiring Marx-ist... Summary: 5 Stars
...then this DVD is a great place to start! I recently rented this DVD through Netflix to see if it would be worth my money. Of course being a HUGE Marx Brothers fan I would buy about anything about them...and have. This particular DVD is one I do plan to add to my collection. It gives an entertaining and fairly thorough look at the early years and history of their rise to fame. The early stuff is EXCELLENT but the later stuff, such as the never-aired sitcom the boys filmed in 1959 is kind of sad...when you see the once quick and spry Chico having trouble with his lines and being rather stooped. You do get however touching remarks with his only daughter, Maxine and a rare glimpse of Groucho's daughter, Miriam. And you get to hear Groucho sing a bit of "Peasie Weasie". I had always wondered how that song went. It is a great DVD for the money and great for anyone wanting to get a taste of these comic geniuses. For a REALLY indepth and objective look at the boys you simply must read MONKEY BUSINESS by Simon Louvish and for an inside take...HARPO SPEAKS by Harpo and a more literate friend. LONG LIVE THE MARX BROTHERS!!!
Summary of The Unknown Marx BrothersOriginally broadcast on PBS in 1993 and narrated by Leslie Nielsen, this comprehensive documentary charts the career of the Marx Brothers--Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and sometimes Zeppo--from their beginnings on the vaudeville circuit to their final appearances on popular TV programs and commercials of the 1950s and early '60s. Featuring interviews with many surviving family members, friends, and close associates, the film covers the brothers' early stage careers in great detail, including the origins of their stage names and rare film footage of a sketch from one of their most popular comedy plays. Also fascinating is a long-lost film clip of Harpo in a silent film from 1925--four years before the Marx Brothers made their screen debut in Cocoanuts. The Marx Brothers' film career is not the central focus here. Rather, the film shows us the brothers offscreen (through rare home movies and newsreels) and especially after their retirement from movies. Revealing and affectionate toward its subjects, this is a must-see for any Marx Brothers fan. The DVD includes several hilarious outtakes from Groucho's quiz-show career as host of You Bet Your Life, and a "Zoom-links" feature that offers additional film clips at given points throughout the documentary. --Jeff Shannon
