Movie Reviews of The Tuskegee Airmen

Movie Review: Great Entertainment and view of American history
Summary: 4 Stars

The Tuskegee Airmen was a very dramatic movie with great demonstration of fellowship, determination, honor, and patriotism. The actors captured your attention and pulled you in. You felt their anger, sorrow, pain and pride. It is well worth watching several times over.

Movie Review: The "Tuskeegee Experiment" is a great and informative film.
Summary: 4 Stars

I tend to get very emotional about this film. I can never see the ending without tears of appreciation, joy and intense pride. HBO is by far the best at making original movies and shows. The film has technical flaws... every film does... but beyond them it tells a story that, by design or negligence, has been ignored by American history for almost a half century.

Laurence Fishburne and Andre Braugher deliver stellar performances as Hannibal Lee and the great military leader Benjamin O. Davis. The other great actors who have some sort of direct or distant connection to the cause, to contribute were Cuba Gooding Jr., Courtney B. Vance, Allen Payne, Malcolm Jamal Warner, and Andre Braugher.

This film was wrapped up for me when a red necked White bomber pilot says in the final briefing: "I have a crew whose lives are my responsibility. If it's all the same to you Sir, I want the 332nd to take me to Berlin and back". That cinematic statement is a long overdue.

`Tuskegge Airmen' is a movie that should be viewed by all Americans interested in seeing a slice of Americana that's been neglected. Most will identify with the raw emotion evoked by the plight of these brave and talented men. Black Americans will be moved to tears as we are reminded of what those trailblazers overcame so that future Black soldiers, airmen and every day citizens could take their rightful place in American society, proud of their past and heritage. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the Tuskegee Airmen. This movie makes it clear why. I hope HBO continues it's long trend of fantastic films and series.

Movie Review: Enlightning.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great air combat film and based on true history.
The main emphasis is on combat flying and the racisim that affected the black pilots of WWII in America.
Great value for history buffs and air combat fans.
Also it's just a very moving film.

Movie Review: very good acting, but slow to take get going
Summary: 3 Stars

One cannot help but compare this to Glory: called upon to risk their lives, these pioneering African-Americans are blocked at every turn by arrogant whites, which in fact happened, and they question their commitment to the country. The problem with this film is that it is grindingly slow to get moving, with a few moments that are spectacular and memorable, and this makes it predictable. Yes, they prove themselves. Is that giving away anything? Perhaps I shd not have watched this so soon after Glory, which is an absolutely first rate film.

The actors are very very good, starting with Fishburn, the star. But there are also those that failed at their task - died in accidents or by their own hand - as well as those who died in combat. These are genuine talents, and worth the ride just for them.

The story, of course, is worth learning in all its detail, so I am glad to own this film and will definitely share it with my kids when they are ready. As an historcal film, it is quite good. It is just that the script does not do these guys justice, and the direction is lacking in energy. As such, it comes off as a formula drama.

Recommended with these caveats in mind.
