Movie Reviews of The Tudors - The Complete First Season

Movie Review: Not Accurate but Inspiring
Summary: 5 Stars

This series follows the life of Henry V111 and his court. We are drawn into the politics of the day as well as daily life at court. Henry is passionate, sensual, playful, and all powerful. His interactions with the women in his life are captivating. The acting, costumes and sets are spectacular. I am now inspired to read the "real story". I am presently reading The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir. The book is even more fascinating than the series. See the series, and if you want more, buy Alison's Weir book. I recommend both highly!

Movie Review: Historically inaccurate, but fun!
Summary: 4 Stars

You throw the history book away when you watch this series, but it is fun and the costumes are gorgeous!!

Movie Review: The Tudors
Summary: 5 Stars

I highly recommend this DVD for anyone who has not seen the series The Tudors and those who have seen it and enjoyed it will want to watch it again. People who are very familiar with the Tudor period in English history may have some initial trouble adjusting to the concept of Henry VIII not growing fatter as he ages, but the acting is superb. It is a fascinating and complicated period in English history and the series does an excellent job of conveying the upheaval that Henry's desire for Anne Boleyn and determination to annul his marriage to Queen Katherine created in his kingdom.

Movie Review: Doesn't have to be accurate
Summary: 4 Stars

The perspective and/or the rather lengthy critique of the show by
Ms. Rheinwald gives way to a rather historical and scholarly interpretation of what actually happened during that historical time period. Unfortunately, Showtime is not really concerned with historical accuracy; portraying the show as a scholarly docudrama. When you review their show description, they say The Tudors is loosely based upon the life of Henry VIII; subsequently, the show is strictly for entertainment purposes. Showtime never intended to follow the lives of Henry VIII and Anne Boyelyn exactly as they lived. Most viewers view Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a good actor and an attractive man. The average fan of Showtime would not enjoy watching an actor, who closely resembles the physical characteristics of Henry VIII. Sex, murder, lies, deceit, etc., is what sells or draws in the viewers who patronize Showtime, that is, pay the extra money for the cable channel.

If you look at the reviews, most of people enjoy the show and it has been picked up for another season.

What's important is the show causes the viewer to study, do their own research into that time period. Maybe it will inspire some people to take a history class or read an accurate textbook on this time period.

Television and movies are not accurate, if they were, the character of Moses would have been played by an African-American actor, not Charlton Heston.
