Movie Reviews of The Trouble with Harry

Movie Review: Hitchcock Lite
Summary: 3 Stars

The Trouble With Harry is an average movie with a couple of bright spots. It is certainly appealing to see a very young and vibrant Shirley MacLaine. She is quite the scene stealer in this film. John Forsythe is very amusing as an eccentric artist with little interest in selling his photos. This 1955 film is not in the top of the Hitchcock body of work; however, it is worth seeing to get an even closer gift at the dark side of Hitch's humor. I notice that there are many 5 star reviews for this movie which I think is more about respect and admiration for the director than for the film itself. Certain directors tend to get byes when they make an average film. This is an average movie that is in the 3 to 3.5 star range. Recommended for Hitchcock fans.

Movie Review: macabre comedy with cheerfully unfeeling people
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a really odd film: there is a body that gets a bunch of accomplices deeply involved with each other. While trying to hide something and caring nothing whatsoever for Harry the corpse or even displaying any normal emotions, they go about their merry ways and get in deeper and deeper until they seem to have manipulated events to their likings. Unfortunately, it really didn't work for me at a basic level - I couldn't believe in them, didn't think it was funny, and could barely pay attention. However, it is fun to see the introduction of Shirley MacLean, who is a truly fine actress.

Not recommended. I just didn't get it.

Movie Review: It's no "Weekend at Bernie's"
Summary: 1 Stars

The trouble with Harry is he forgot his lines, he floats on a sea of grass, he needs to go on a diet and his momma dresses him funny. The trouble with Harry is I think he was in this later film where his eyes shook like he was spinning in a cotton candy machine and he used to advertise as a giant holding up a Chevy-sized sandwich, and later he was running from the law. The trouble with Harry is he never got to boink Shirley MacLaine before she turned into a crusty old regression marionette. The trouble with Harry is why in the middle of a technicolor town, poodle skirts shiny with sex and befuddled fuddyduddies who can't hear a thing and their lawns glow green like Tommyknockers? The trouble with Harry is he's a voyeur, in fact everyone in that town is spying on everyone else, but nobody sees a thing when it comes to big, fat Harry dressed like a hot-air balloon. The trouble with Harry is he wanted to live a normal life as an outcast -- like an antisocial panhandler playing hide-and-seek.

Movie Review: Not for Hitchcock fans
Summary: 1 Stars

I saw this when it was a new film in 1955 (yes, I'm old!) and being a Hitchcock fan I was looking for something I didn't find in this film. I have re-watched it several times since then, mostly on TCM, looking in vain for what I must have missed.
I think Hitchcock must have tried to see how little he could put in a film and still have folks pay out good money to see it. Must have been some of his odd sense of humor at work. At least Weekend at Bernie's had a little fun out of the premise of a dead body being present with nobody holding their nose due to the smell.
Sorry Hitch, but this one and Family Plot were duds. I think you knew that when you made them. Too bad!

Movie Review: They should have shot the scriptwriter instead!
Summary: 1 Stars

A hunter is out one day shooting rabbits, suddenly he discovers a dead man and thinks he must have shot him by mistake. As the story unfolds several village folk come across the body and each has a tale to tell. It was so boring! How can anyone like this lame excuse for a film? Hitchcock or not it just goes nowhere. I had to fight to stay awake. Don't bother, there has to be better films you can spend your time and money on; this is nothing more then dated garbage.
