Movie Review: Softly and Tenderly
Summary: 5 Stars
I never view movies or read books more than once, but this one has been a keeper for me for many years. The first time I saw it I bought the VHS. I have to have the DVD just in case my VCR breaks and I need to view it again at the end of a stressful day. I have no idea why. The variation of old hymns through the movie is wonderful even though I'm not religious. The acting is wonderful from Page to the villian daughter-in-law, but neither of these makes is one of the best movies ever produced. It's just someting of the heart.Movie Review: F. When F. Murray Abraham stood before the Academy and announced that Geraldine Page had won the Oscar for Best Actress, he called her "the greatest actress in the English language." Now that was over the top, yes, but Page was never better or more moving than in this brilliantly understated role. It serves as the capstone of a long and distinguished career, and every film lover owes it to himself or herself to see it, if only to understand how powerful and beautiful a simple, honest movie can be. IT IS TRULY ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREAT MOVIES MADE MEMORABLE BY THE PERFORMANCE OF MISS GERALDINE PAGE. SHE WAS UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF A KIND AND IS SADLY MISSED. PRESERVING THIS FILM ON DVD WOULD BE ADDING TO THE RICHNESS OF TODAY'S OFFERINGS AND A STRONG REMINDER TO ALL HOW POWERFUL A MOTION PICTURE CAN BE. A GREAT ACTRESS IN AN OUTSTANDING WORK OF ART. Have enjoyed this movie numerous times before. This time was able to share this with my lady.
Geraldine Page is always enjoyable for me to watch, in this movie she is upstaged
by the DIL and son. Seems this movie has not really been appreciated by
the younger generations, understandably. As the saying goes, you had to be there.
Discovered this DVD and purchased to show my sweet lady, but
would not recommend to purchase if you are under 50YO.

I just wanted to add my voice to the others who support the work of the writers and filmmakers who bring their creative talents to stories like Trip to Bountiful. They compel us to examine the deep feelings that are so strongly intertwined with our sense of who we are; the universal experience of being human. Bountiful is beautifully crafted as a play, wonderfully filmed, and truthfully acted. This film should be released on DVD -- we all deserve it!
