Movie Reviews of The Trip to Bountiful

Movie Review: What a Trip!
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me just say that I agree with every single one of the 5 star ratings. I too have been waiting so long for this treasure to be released on DVD. Although I had seen Geraldine Page in a few movies here and there (scared me as a child in 'Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice'), this movie really opened my eyes to one of the greatest actresses of all time. I read 'flawless' in a number of the other reviews and that is truly how to discribe her performance in this film. Great supporting cast too. I grew up in a lot of different areas of the country and totally identified with Carrie Watts and her desire to return home. So glad to see this finally released on DVD (widescreen!).

Movie Review: I agree with Andrew's review! FOR SHAME!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I cannot agree more with the review that was written by Andrew Gray (see below). This is a work of art and should be on DVD by now!

Oh how I loath the studios for not releasing more classic Oscar winning films on DVD. The Criterion Collection should pick up this negative and restore it to its pristine condition. What a joy this would be.

So, in the words of Mr. Gray, FOR SHAME! on all those "fools" at the studios who feel Geraldine Page isn't worth the effort deserved for such a marvelous actress. If anyone else is listening, read Andrew's review below and write to all you can on the internet and plead our case: RELEASE THIS FILM ON DVD NOW!

Movie Review: wonderful film!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just want to mention Rebecca DeMornay's role in this movie. She plays a young married woman going home to her parent's because her husband has gone off to war. Geraldine Page's character meets her on the bus. Their scenes together remind me of a time when older people were respected for their insight and experience, when people had real conversations and when young people looked up to their elders. There is also a conversation between Page's character and the man who runs the bus station of the town near Bountiful that's beautiful in it's simplicity. I loved this movie on many levels.

Movie Review: Close to Home
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie makes me cry every time I see it because my mother and daddy asked me to take them back to their country homeplace outside Greenville, Texas one last time back in the early 80s. I drove them there and watched tears well up in their eyes as we drove around the area where the old homes used to be and the memories so strong. They're both gone now and I'm so glad I took them back home. The movie will always be closest to my heart for obvious reasons.

Geraldine Page captured the true essence of an innocence and sweetness that no longer exists.

Movie Review: Geraldine Page is still the Greatest...
Summary: 5 Stars

All I can say is that Geraldine Page is among the finest actresses of the 20th Century, whether on stage or film. I don't understand why "The Trip to Bountiful" or "Summer and Smoke" or "Sweet Bird of Youth" aren't out there on DVD. She died only months after finally winning the Oscar in 1986; a tribute to this great lady's films is long overdue. Anyone else agree? 4-22-05; the DVD is wonderful! Thank you, powers that be. Now where are "Summer & Smoke" & "Sweet Bird"? UPDATE: Sweet Bird is a fine DVD; still missing Ms. Page's masterpiece, Summer & Smoke.
