Movie Reviews of The Trip to Bountiful

Movie Review: A DVD Must!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Trip to Bountiful is one of those movies that reveals another layer each time you watch. I saw it first when I was 35 and I couldn't believe how hateful Jessie Mae (Carlin Glenn) seemed or how weak Ludie (John Heard) was. As I got a few more years under my belt, I understood ALL of the characters a little better. No one was good or evil. They each had experienced Life's dissapointments, yet they eventually created a pact for peace in the "eternally quiet" countryside of Bountiful.

Geraldine Page's performance in the bus station may be one of the most powerful scenes I've ever experienced. "Suffering, I don't mind. Suffering, I understand. But these 12 long years of endless, petty bickering has MADE me like Jessie Mae SEES me and it's ugly . . . I just want to go home."

PLEASE put this on DVD.

Movie Review: Remembering the past
Summary: 5 Stars

It was a good movie which caused you to think about how your life could end up that way. It just made you think about getting older and how as you age you wish some things were as they used to be. As you age, you reflect a lot on the past. You hear of friends who have died etc. Lots of things have changed and loved ones etc. have passed away. It causes great sadness and you realize how short your life is.

I am glad she got to go back and see how things had changed. I am glad that she still had good memories of her past. She could live the rest of her life without regret now because she did get to go back. She would have never been happy otherwise.

This movie really touched my heart because I too look back as I have gotten to be a senior citizen.

Movie Review: Geraldine Page is great
Summary: 5 Stars

It took 8 tries, but on the 8th Geraldine Page finally took home
the Oscar. How nice it was for this warm and tender film obviously
shot with love and little money. Page must live in a small two
room house with her son and daughter-in-law and her one wish before she dies is to go back to Bountiful a little hamlet that no longer exists. Page was always at her best in a role like this. She gets fine support from John Heard and Rebecca de Mornay. But the real treat is the performance from Carlin Glynn. At first she comes across as a daughter-in-law from hell but by the end she has injected the part with warmth and you realize she is not the monster you might think. I am glad this will be on dvd
for younger moviegoers who may not have seen it originally.

Movie Review: scandalous
Summary: 5 Stars

It is disgusting that, considering the amount of trash that passes for quality film entertainment these days, 'The Trip to Bountiful' has not yet been released on DVD.
Come on wake up whichever company will be responsible for putting this superb movie on DVD - there are scores of film goers avidly waiting to buy.
Geraldine Page displays the kind of bravura and legendary acting that is all too rare nowadays, and she proves just how exquisite to watch is the art of true acting - sadly now diminishing from our TV and cinema screens.
If for no other reason than honouring the memory of a truly great actress, please show your respect and admiration for her work by re-mastering this movie on a DVD edition.

Movie Review: A Glimpse of the Past
Summary: 5 Stars

This extraordinary film is based on a play by Horton Foote, with the lead character brought to life by Geraldine Page in an Oscar-winning performance. It is a crime that it is not available on DVD.
I was raised in Houston and South Texas around the time of the film, and the evoking of this time period is astounding. The clothing, furniture, the countryside, even the old bus are authentic, and present an accurate picture of that time and place.
Miss Page's character is so moving. The tragedies in her life have not defeated her, and she longs for one last trip to the little town of her girlhood. We should all hope that we can maintain our dignity as we grow older as this woman does.
