Movie Reviews of The Trip

Movie Review: Riveting...not to be missed
Summary: 5 Stars

The Trip is just that - a romantic comedy/drama and history lesson rolled into one. Certain to make you laugh "out loud" and cry tears of joy and tears of pain. The movie follows the lives of 2 opposites, Alan and Tommy from their meeting in the early 70's through the 1980's. Inside the story line are interwoven glimpes of our very short gay and lesbian human rights history - many through actual images, voice and video impacting our world during the period including the Nixon years, Carter, Anita Bryant, Reagan and eventually AIDS. A love story and history lesson unfold quickly in this well acted and directed film. A MUST for your collection. As someone now in their 30's, this is a trip down memory lane, as I recall the times reflected upon. For those younger, a lesson on the battles already fought and won, and those we need to keep fighting. For those older, probably an even more impacting film. Not just a historical perspective, the film is full of love and humor. In my estimate, the film rates high with some of my other favorites including Torch Song Trilogy and The Sum of Us. Not to be missed!

Movie Review: Tripping...
Summary: 5 Stars

There are things about this film that share inspiration with the more popular and well known "Angels in America" - the gay Republican, the time frame of pre-AIDS to AIDS America, stuff like that. The main characters are funny and endearing in many ways, but just a little flat. However, they are recognizable - maybe the whole world back then was a little flat compared to today?

Okay, the story in a nutshell could be the same kind of coming-out story many of us have. Boy finds he likes boy, boy doesn't want to like boy, boy resists liking boy, boy meets boy, boy loves boy. The first character, Alan, is a YR and a journalist who wants to expose the evils of that evil he has inside of him, and invites a young activist Tommy to do an interview. The rest, as they say, is history. There are lots of campy one-liners as indeed there has to be in any gay film like this. There are cameos and smaller roles for people of dubious fame (a Bond girl, anyone?) but ultimately the tale revolves around the Alan-Tommy affair.

Worth the trip!

Movie Review: EXCELLENT MOVIE-FUN AND ENTERTAINING
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't usually enjoy films of this genre but I was deeply moved and entertained by "The Trip" Well written, well acted, funny and moving. This is a love story between opposites who meet in the early 70's. Flash forward to the late 70's and this once happy couple are in a crisis when someone's past comes back to haunt them. Flash forward to the mid 80's and the couple are reunited on a road trip where they find the time to reconcile and heal old wounds. The cast features 70's icon and former Bond girl Jill ST. John (in her best role ever)Julie Brown, Alexis Arquette, and a cast of familar faces from movies and TV. The film brilliantly balances historical elements from the 70's/80's with comedy/drama/action/adventure in a 90 min. movie. This is truly a classic film and everyone should see it. FUN BONUS IN THE FILM: Clip of Anita Bryant getting a pie in the face from an activist, a very sexy and funny strip-tease in the middle of the road, and news clips of important events from the time period.

Movie Review: Best Movie I've Seen in a Long Time (any genre!)
Summary: 5 Stars

What an incredible movie! It works on so many levels: Gay Romance, Road trip movie, Comedy, and 70's Period piece.
With the exception of the also excellent Beautiful Life, there aren't that many gay themed movies out there that can be considered truly romantic. The Trip totally delivers on that.
The acting is superb. Larry Sullivan can make you fall on the floor laughing one second and break your heart the next. He's one of the best actors I've seen in years and I hope he continues finding success. Steve Braun is equally impressive. He's got that Brad Pitt thing going on but he's more than an imitation. He owns this role and is extremely convincing in the evolution of his character.
Another great talent to emerge from this movie is first-time writer/director Miles Swain. I can't wait to see what's next from him.
I highly recommend this movie to everyone (gay, bi, straight - whatever). It's an emotional journey that everyone should go through.

Movie Review: Simply Superb!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are looking for a a feel-good movie that will run the gammit laughter to tears and everything in between, there it is. The touching love story unfolding between the two main charaters takes a very gradual but believable path. The wigs need a littel work but we were so caught up the obvious attraction between these two that the little imperfections were easy to ignore. After watching, my partner and I decided to suprise each other with a copy of the movie. He bought one for me and I for him without telling each other. It is rare that we agree on a movie and make it a purchase but this one captivated us both and held us there until the end. If I have one gripe, it is that I didn;t like the way it ended. I am not a drama romantic but I would like to have seen the two mains go on to a long and fulfilling life together. Who needs to be reminded that bad things happen to good people - especially when the chemistry is right.
