Movie Reviews of The Trip

Movie Review: "The Trip" is absolutely a touching romantic comedy.
Summary: 5 Stars

While roaming around the aisles of a local video rental store, "The Trip" managed to catch my eye. Thinking it would be some pathetic excuse for a stereotypical gay romantic comedy, I still decided to rent it and see for myself.

Believe it or not, after watching the movie from start to finish, the movie had become one of my most favorite movies of all time. I absolutely could not believe that a movie I had almost not rented was now a film I would watch for years.

The story chronicles two young men during the gay-rights movement of the seventies and eighties: one is an active gay-rights activist (Tommy), while the other is a closeted "straight-laced" republican (Alan) who is writing a book on the evils of homosexuality. After Tommy and Alan meet, however, there is no denying that an incredible chemistry exists between them. (I will stop the description here, as I do not want to give away the whole story...)

Though its plot is somewhat predictable at times, I still believe that "The Trip" belongs in any romantic comedy collection. The love and extraordinary chemistry that exist between the two main characters transcends sexual orientation itself in my opinion. Whether gay or straight, the film's storyline is relatable by any gender.

Movie Review: Excellent love story that's moving and loads of fun
Summary: 5 Stars

The film, "The Trip", is a wonderfully told love story with a sense of humor, that just about anyone who has ever been in love can relate to. The story itself is fairly basic; the struggle with coming to terms with ones sexuality, first love, and how life can change us. However, it is how the story is presented with a balance of diverse characters, entertaining dialogue and timeless themes of love and emotion that make the film extremely entertaining. The characters are well written for their roles in the story, nicely developed and represented. Gay or straight, just about everyone can relate to this film on one level or another. The witty dialogue keeps the films' pace brisk and fun to follow. But, the gem of this film is its comedic presentation of the period in which the story takes place (70's and 80's). From the clothes to the hairstyles, the film gives us a hilarious reminder of the way we were. Everything about this film is just the way it should be; an intriguing story woven together with outstanding acting and masterful direction. Jill ST. John, who plays "Mary" has never been better. She plays a great character and it's obvious she's having a good time. This film will be a part of my DVD library for years to come and I anxiously await Miles Swain's next film!

Movie Review: great love story
Summary: 5 Stars

i absolutely loved this movie. this was a truly touching love story. i really felt that it showed the type of love that two people can share, and also shows how sometimes opposites really can attract. the main difference beteween the two characters were their political views and how they chose to exercise their views. but the movie also showed that preconceived notions of how someone should be cannot hold back who they really are. i also like this movie because it gives someone my age a chance to see what it was like to live in the 70s. it gives a sense of the troubles and trials that the gay community went through during that time frame also. i love the fact that all through the movie the two main characters always understood each other and maintained their love for one another. to be totally honest i did not see one bad performance in the whole movie either. i really liked the character played by alexis arquette, i thought that he was a terrific comic relief. the funniest part of the movie is the strip scene, just fyi. in all honesty the movie is completely basic and sticks to good filmmaking and makes this into a great romantic comedy. this is one of the great gay themed movies to come out in a long time (there was no pun intended there either).

Movie Review: Moving love story
Summary: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this movie. It's about a young man in college named Alan, who is a straight republican writing a book about homosexuality. Tommy is an openly gay man who is trying to change people's perception about homosexuality and move its rights into the mainstream. They ultimately fall for each other, and Alan decides not to publish his book when he realizes that he is gay too. That was in 1973 when they met, and 4 years later, the book gets published against his wishes, and it pushes Tommy and Alan apart. Tommy finds out that Alan is the one who wrote the book. In 1984, Alan gets a message from Tommy, that he is sick and wants to see him to bring him to his doctor in Texas. Alan is living with another man, who he learns was the one who revealed that Alan was the one who wrote the book, which in turn caused a breakup between Tommy and Alan. Alan travels to Mexico to bring Tommy to his doctor in Texas, and they rediscover their love for one another on a road trip. The movie is funny, touching, and moving. The supporting cast is great as well, like Alan's mother and his friend, give plenty of laughs along the way. A wonderful movie worth watching over and over.

Movie Review: The Best Gay-Themed Movie..EVER!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first rented this DVD from Netflix, and after watching it,realized if ever there was a MUST OWN DVD, The Trip is IT!! This movie`s appeal will resonate with a very broad audience,..not only the gay audience for which it was made..The themes in this superbly written and acted film reach across all lines of society..straight and gay alike.Larry Sullivan and Steve Braun as the lead characters,Alan and Tommy, not only bring these two characters to life, they are so convincing that they actually BECOME these two men.Sirena Irvin and indie fave Alexis Arquette are hilarious in their supporting roles along with veteran stars Jill St.John and Ray Baker. Not to be overlooked on the DVD is the director`s commentary which provides an interesting "backstory" about the movie as well as a commentary on FALCON`S LAIR..the legendary last home of Rudolph Valentino at which much of the movie was filmed(The first time ever this home has been used in a movie)!Miles Swain, the writer director,in my opinion is a very talented man and I only hope we see much more from him and the rest of this outstanding cast! This movie is NOT TO BE MISSED!!!!
