Movie Reviews of The Time Machine TourMovie Review: Beyond The Paradoxical... Summary: 5 Stars
Darren Hayes is a master of live performances. As the proud owner of Savage Garden's "Superstars & Cannonballs," and his solo concert, "Too Close For Comfort" (which I've had to permanently change my media player's regional coding for just so I could watch it), I can attest to this man's ability to play off a crowd. To take all the energy they pump into him, and send it right back at them in the form of a stellar, energetic performance.
His latest concert, "The Time Machine Tour," only refines that art. The concert represents a high point in Darren's life...married to a man he loves, happy and successful but relatively unburdened by the trappings of mega-celebrity or "faddishness." I envy this man's personal happiness, but it shows through and affects his fans through his work, his music, and his performances...
The performance on "Time Machine" is top-notch. Each song is perfectly suited to where it is sung...with the surprising exception of "Affirmation," a personal favorite, placed near the end of the show rather than as the grand finale as has been his trademark up till now. Darren has remixed Affirmation several different times, going for a more heartfelt, less synthesized version each time. This one may be a little bit simplified, but it's still recognizable as the same song...and with the sentiments in that number, and "Casey," the track from TDTWM that preceded it, simpler can sometimes be better.
Of course, what goes for music doesn't necessarily go for the stage itself. Each set piece is lavish and beautiful, with stunning surprises practically each and every song...the most impressive of which in my opinion comes between "Casey" and "Affirmation." Keep an eye out.
All in all, I highly recommend this to any fan of Darren's, or the pop/rock genre in general. I also recommend this to people who associate 'pop' with the teenybopper genre. This is adult contemporary at its finest, both showstopping and thought-provoking.
5 stars, and counting.
Movie Review: Gotta Know, Gotta See -- What Is He Building in There?! Summary: 5 Stars
I need not proclaim or laud Hayes for his musical talent or artistic evolution. It is 2008; either one knows of Darren and finds him a genius or, as has been the case with most of my peerage, he's an undiscovered gem. For those in the latter category, this is an *excellent* stone from which to step. On this superbly captured closing night of The Time Machine Tour, Darren Hayes does that which so many of his fans thought wholly impossible: he improves upon perfection.
My advice to you?
Buy this DVD; see the man in all of his glory; build your own time machine (or, if you'd rather, simply put the disc on "repeat") so that you can relive the wonder.
WHAT'S MASTERFUL --
+ Hayes's fantastically unique (and well-trained) voice
+ The tour's beautifully designed video projections
+ Darren's energy & enthusiasm
+ The simple yet stylish choreography
+ The crew's lighting design
+ The artist's larger-than-life (not to mention disco-fied) paper crane
WHAT'S MEDIOCRE --
- The disc's "extras"... or lack thereof
- The number of costume changes (one)
WHAT'S MISCARRIED --
X Darren's almost anti-climatic entrance
X The fact that Amazon.com doesn't post a set-list (I'll help you out with this one :D)

Movie Review: AMAZING!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This concert is amazing. The way it was filmed, the energy and Darren's performances are incredible. Watching this DVD made me a little sad. In a lot of ways. I really connect with a lot of his songs, especially "Darkness"-although the live version included here is a sped up version of the original, it still gives me goosebumps. As does this live version of "Insasiable". Absolutely stunning. As I was saying, the biggest reason watching this makes me sad is because, an entertainer, such as Darren, that I love, and have loved since day one, is not commercially successful in the USA and therefore, I probably will never see him live. And that really sucks. Because being there is a whole different experience. But I will take what I can get, I guess.
I have to be honest though, about one thing that disappointed me... The setlist. Yes, I understand that this is a tour to promote his latest album. But I could have done without some of the tracks. Although, I wouldn't have been surprised if he didn't include any Savage Garden songs. I am disappointed in the ones he did chose. "Best Thing"???? "Affirmation"??? Those are good songs, but no where near his best. I think "Gunning Down Romance", "To the Moon and Back" and "Break Me Shake Me", would have fit right in. His first solo album was basically ignored, and I am shocked at the lack of songs sung from the Spark album.
But, all in all, this dvd as a whole makes up for any complaints that I may have. Any lover of good music should own a copy of this.
Movie Review: Time Travel on a Neon Bird - What More Could You Ask For?! Summary: 5 Stars
Darren Hayes just gets better and better! His ability to write personal, heartfelt music that can lift a crowd en masse, while simultaneously convincing the indivual listener that the song was written just for them - it's incredible!
The Time Machine Tour was Darren's dream, and he made it a reality - it's a miracle of human determination. Part Pop Concert, part theatrical production, this show causes me to catch my breath again and again. "Casey" alone is enough of a reason to buy this DVD. I was lucky enough to be there when the Neon Bird was brought out onto the stage - the thrill that went through me then returns again and again as I recall the moment I fully understood (at least from my own perspective) the extent of what Darren is trying to say on his beautiful album.
This is so much more than a Tour - it's a journey of healing: for Darren, yes, but also for anyone who chooses to board that Time Machine with him. The idea of returning to your past and making peace with it - not changing it, just accepting and moving on....I can't be the only one who thinks this is a work of genius. I can't begin to imagine the direction his next project will take - one thing's for sure though, it will be as innovative as both "Tension and the Spark" and "This Delicate Thing...." and wherever he goes, I will follow.
Bravo Darren!
Movie Review: Darren, Thank You For Giving Us Your Best Concert Ever On DVD Summary: 5 Stars
When I first heard Darren Haye's first solo album "Spin" I always assumed that he would have a better carrier solo than with Savage Garden. Well afew years past and I really didn't hear much from him.
Then in 2007 I was flipping thru the channels and I ended up on LOGO and I saw this incredible music video (with this awesome song). The weird thing was that the singer looked and sounded so familiar to me. It turned out that it was Darren with his music video "On the Verge of Something Wonderful." I immediately ran on the computer went on amazon.com and bought his CD "This Delicate thing We've Made." When I got it I couldn't stop listening to it it was smart, clever, and I think HIS BEST CD EVER!!!
Now, I know most of you who are reading this are wondering what the Hell this has to do with the concert, but, one of my friends had the pleasure of seeing him in concert and he told me that the show was great. The best song he performs is "Casey"(which is coincidentally the best song on the CD) and that he compared it to a Madonna show (only it was a little more intimate).
If you like Darren it would be extremely wise for you to get this DVD. Oh, and if you want to see Darren in concert check out the Savage Garden DVD "Live and on Tour in Australia."
