Movie Reviews of The Thrill of it All!Movie Review: A classic Doris Day gem... fun movie! Summary: 5 Stars
A hip and happening Doris Day comedy in which the girl next door becomes a media sensation. Doris stars, not surprisingly, as a wholesomely sexy suburban housewife who is hired to become the spokesperson for the Happy Soap company, because Happy Soap's crotchety old president finds her stammering, unprofessional endorsements to be refreshingly honest and -- more importantly -- so does the soap-buying public. In fact, the only one who doesn't like her ascent into the media is her grouchy, fragile-egoed husband (played by James Garner), who can't stand the thought of his own wife having a job -- it's just too much of a blow to his masculinity, and besides, who will raise the kids if mommy goes to work? The depth and sheer matter-of-factness to the sexism in this pre-women's movement comedy will be both astounding and instructive to a modern audience, but besides all that, it's also a great vehicle for Day's bubbly, frowsy charm. Garner's character is a bit hysterical, but it's all worth it for the big payoff: his double-take during the swimming pool scene is a golden comedic moment. Scriptwriter Carl Reiner's touch is easy to pick out; Reiner also has some choice cameos as a hammy TV actor on the show that Happy Soap sponsors. There are also plenty of great early '60s character actors, such as Edward Andrews, who you may recognize from old TV re-runs and the like. [Crazy cast note: the Pamela Curran, who plays "Spot Checker," the glamorous model who was the former Happy Soap Girl, is a dead ringer for Drea de Matteo (best known as Adriana, of the Sopranos...) The likeness must be seen to be believed.] Anyway, this is a fun movie, entirely enjoyable and also a real blast of Kennedy-era camp.
Movie Review: ... 7 USD to see my wife Summary: 5 Stars
"HEY, what mine is is mine, and what yours is IS OURS !??! ... in this turbo pink fizzy goody Ms. Beverly Boyer [Doris Day], a touching, clever and beautiful housewife of the traditional way, and Dr. Gerald Boyer [James Garner], a respected, white collar specialist in gynaecology, not only are pestering each other down to the foam but also are struggling on a 80.000 USD play ground suddenly created over making ketchup by starting an outrageous emancipation as a terrible and bready nightmare of a homely apotheosis fighting against female money blossom by developing smug strategies of conflict management from "a pig and the Happy Soap" up to "stethoscope whipping".
The again and again prevented, gynaecologically necessary golden shot in order to draw again on old family traditions, tons of gags, lots of confusion and entanglements, two wonderful kids caring for the marital bliss, two solid columns of sensitive home help and not ending gaudy coloured accessories of images and sound are forcing any air out of the viewer's chest as well are pressing all tears stored in his face ... not to forget the sincerely carried along brown paper bag full of inspiring nuts.
Sorry? ... You would like to have some great fun without any restrictions??? ... Well, if you still have left some humour for such stories from the golden sixties, you are most welcomed.
Movie Review: !!! YES YES YES THE THRILL OF IT ALL IS ON DVD!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Well I was so impressed when I found this DVD and bought it on Amazon.com but I was dissapointed whne I found out that it had hardly any specail features. I mean the only specail feature was that it had the Theatrical Trailer. Which if you buy the current VHS edition it has that on it to. But they can't always get exlcusive interviews with Doris Day and James Garner I guess. Here Is A brief description of the movie. Doris Day and James Garner . Are a regular suburbanite couple who live in a regulay suburban are of Los Angeles. Well one day. One of James Garner's patients gets pregnant. Well she calls James Garner and asks if he and his wife can come to there house for dinner. Well while they are there The ladys father is watching a commercial for HAPPY SOAPS. Well Doris Day sees it and tells of a experience that she had early that day with her daughter. Which was as follows "Mommy that old soap smells like the cracks in the school yard, I want you to use the HAPPY SOAP. Well when Doris Day is done with the HAPPY SOAP. Her little girl says Mommy now my hair smells like my Piano Teacher". Well when the man hears that he hires Doris to be the spokeswoman for his soap. Well at the begining she only did one commercial a week. But after that she starts getting crowded with appointments . Well at the end she learns that her real place is at home. Great Movie. 5 Star Rating.
Movie Review: I'm Beverly Boyer and I'm a pig Summary: 5 Stars
Dr. Gerald Boyer (James Garner) helps a woman to become pregnant "in his role as a doctor". He is the classic conservative husband who assumes that his wife would stay home and make catsup while he earns the living. However, after being offered an enormous amount of money Beverly Boyer (Doris Day) decides to take a job doing commercials for the family that James Garner helped.
On the TV shows that Beverly Boyer does the advertisement on, each week Carl Reiner gets to play a different character (same plot) bad guy. They say it is too subtle for the audience to notice that it is the same script. After all, we do not notice that the same plots run through most TV programs today.
Naturally this upsets Dr. Gerald Boyer. So he devises a scheme to rectify the situation. The interplay between the characters keeps us laughing.
No one can tell me that the original person slated to sell Happy Soap, Spot Checker (Pamela Curran), could not sell ME soap from a bathtub. Ha, Not risqué huh?
This is a great 60's comedy and if you like the over flowing soap suds scene then you will also enjoy "Bachelor in Paradise" (1961) with Bob Hope.
Move Over Darling
Movie Review: Excellent movie, but some of these other reviews are idiotic. Summary: 5 Stars
and I quote: "I can't believe that there was ever a time when women were expected to be housewives{sic} and not work!" This has to be one of the most asinine comments I have heard in a while. I myself can't believe there was a time when the housewife stayed home & actually watched her own children. (Instead of leaving them be to experiment with drug use, pre-marital sex or joining a street gang.) Not to mention, a household could get by on one salary in those days, which also led to less marital discourse, & the actual existence of a home life. I also can't believe there was a time when the divorce rate in America was below a whopping 50%.
Which I guess leads to another asinine comment: "Gerald's refusal to accept that Beverly's new career infringes on her duties as housewife is, of course, outdated thinking today." I guess the concept of a housewife is "outdated thinking." What is modern thinking? Work, work, work, while my marriage falls apart and there is no one to take care of the home or offspring. I would take the lifestyle of 50 years ago anytime, the way this disgusting world is today.
