What can be more tragic than forbidden love? And not something so simple as choosing between your friends or family and your love, try choosing between the one you love and God himself. This is the choice that must be made by one man who's head belongs in heaven and heart belongs on earth with the one woman he loves. What will he do? how will this all end? You will only know if you see this wonderful movie! This story could not be more romantic, captivating or tragic. the characters so rich with life that they become a part of you from start to finish. You can feel their joy, and pain as the saga unfolds and unlike many movies you actually care what happens next. I warn you this movie can become addictive! And Even if you are not a huge Romance fan there are plenty of other aspects to this movie that can keep you entertained from start to finish. Be sure to have your tissue ,snack and blanket ready. This is the perfect movie for those long rainy days. Don't miss out on getting to know these characters! You will truly be sorry if you don't.
Movie Review: Best Movie ever! I love it so much that I don't want the movie to end... Summary: 5 Stars
I first read the book when I was still a college student in China. The story was so beautiful and I remember that I finished reading the story within one day, did not even get time to eat because I could not stop reading. It was such a touching, romantic and sad story and made me crying and crying.
Now 15 years later, I was read the story in English again. The story in English is just equally beautiful and was more subtle and revealing in some areas than the Chinese translated version. The Chinese version did an excellent job too though.
Then I finally bought the DVD. Oh, I have to say that the whole cast crew were just phenomenal. They are just what I imagined they should have looked like. Richard Chamerlain was just unbelievable. He was Ralph. As one other reviewer pointed us, once you watch the movie, you'd wish that these people are live and truly exist.
What a struggle between flesh and soul. What a guilty yet pure love! This is definitely a DVD I will keep forever.
Movie Review: HAUNTING, SENSUAL, EPIC Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely cherish this film ( and to the younger viewers- dont be afraid- I was only 3 when it first aired ) Richard Chamberlin is haunting and beautiful. He embraced this role like nothing I have ever seen.
This story plays on emotions you never knew you had, and expresses beautifully how tragic love ( in its many forms ) can be. This is one of the best stories ever told, and I have never seen a movie capture the art of story telling so well. Henry Mancini's score is haunting and perfect and strikes the core of your heart. The scenes between Sydney Penny as young Meggie and Richard Chamberlin are precious, and those between Rachel Ward as a grown Meggie and Chamberlin are electric.
Richard Kiley is heartbreaking as Paddy, and B. Stanwyck is both chilling and tragic as the complicated Mary Carson.
You will feel for these characters, you will believe them and you will be haunted and touched by this epic story of love in its truest form.
Movie Review: Thorn Birds finally on DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I knew when Paramount released Shogun on DVD a few months ago, Warner would release The Thorn Birds. Next to Shogun, one of the best of Richard Chamberlain's resume (let alone Miniseries). Here he plays a Catholic priest who is driven by his ambitious devotion to the church and tormented by the love of a woman (Rachel Ward) he can never have. The miniseries is not completely accurate to Colleen McCullough's best seling novel, but is still an emmy award winning program with talented cast (Richard Kiley, Jean Simmons, Ken Howard, Mare Winningham, Philip Anglim, Bryan Brown, Barbara Stanwyck, Earl Holliman, Piper Laurie and more). With the whole thing on 2 discs, it's a shame that they didn't include, the failed "Missing Years" film also starring Chamberlain (this time with Amanda Donohoe), but I am buying this anyway because it was far superior, and I have other uses for the 8 hour tape I used when I taped it years ago. Buy it while the price is good.:-)
