Movie Reviews of The Thorn BirdsMovie Review: THE DULCIMER FINALLY !! Summary: 5 Stars
PEOPLE:
The DULCIMER is not ON THE VARESE CD but it is on other cd which is accompanying a book. You can buy here on AMAZON. The book with the 16-track cd calls:
"CASE HISTORY OF A FILM SCORE - BY HENRY MANCINI - EDITED BY ROY PHILLIPPE.
WARNER"
IT SAYS: "the book and cd are specially rewarding for Thorn Birds fans who spent $25 on Varese Sarabande's 2-CD soundtrack only to discover that the dulcimer- the central instrument of the score - was inexplicably missing from the main-title track and that the extensive liner notes barely discuss the score (and don't include a single quote from the composer about his music, despite the fact that a little resarch would have turned up three extensive interviews that Mancini gave about the music of The thorn birds). Both of these omissions are rectified by the book and accompanying CD. The main title is intact, complete with dulcimer overlay, and Mancini's discussion of the project is so thorough that all of our questions about this remarkable score are answered at last."
Plus the Dulcimer the book "Case History of a film score" has more: the piano when Ralph sees Meggy slowly coming down the stairs at Mary's birthday party... . This music is missing from the Varese cd, but it is here on this extra cd - Case History. It's wonderful!!
Movie Review: Classic chick sudser Summary: 5 Stars
There is so much that has already been said about this (mostly overextended hype) that I will not elaborate. However, it is interesting to read the effusive reviews lauding this on par with an Australian Gone With The Wind. It's not even close. It does have the verboten theme concerning a Catholic Priest who is tormented with guilt, lust, love, etc., now standard stuff which was pretty shocking when the book first came out, but, considering the goings-on in the church now, tame by comparison. Richard Chamberlain tends to go a little over the top in his portrayal of Ralph De Bricassart, his love scenes are rather laughable. Rachel Ward is absolutely unbelievable as Meggie Cleary. An actress she defintely is NOT!
I read somewhere that her acting was so bad at times while making this series that Richard Chamberlain used to bang his head against a wall in frustration. Barbara Stanwyck, of course, is always terrific in anything she does. She extends a tremendously moving performance as the aging doyenne of Drogheda, lusting for Ralph. She is, really, the only reason to watch. The rest of the actors, in particular Jean Simmons and Richard Kiley, are excellent in their characterizations; however, although it has the scope and depth of an epic,it is still just a tremendously overblown chick flick.
Movie Review: Beautiful but Tragic Love Story..... Summary: 5 Stars
For all those "romantics" out there this is definitely one film not to miss!!!!! I was transfixed to the screen from start to finish..... it is something I will watch again and again....but only from time to time as it is about 12 hours long. (By the way, excuse the cliches). I saw this as a teenager only once and I have to say the beauty of this film for me hasnt changed at all and it must be a good 15 years! What is the film about? In short, it is a love story between a woman and a priest spanning over four or five decades. She is denied his love because he chooses God, but for both of them it is an on going battle as he does love her too. As the story unfolds you will see if he stays faithful to the cloth or if she stays loyal to him.....even two decades is a long time to stay committed to anything! Watch it....and you will find out what happens... The story is passionate and charismatic with a well chosen cast that will linger in your thoughts well after you have watched it. Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward are exemplary in their performances but I have to say some of the supporting actors like Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Simmons and Richard Kiley are truly outstanding! I give this a 5 Star rating and would recommend it to everyone!
Movie Review: Best mini series ever Summary: 5 Stars
I just received this dvd today and I'm really amazed by the quality, very nice colors and sharpness. Only minor thing is that it's in mono and not stereo (or even better: 5.1 surround). But they've really cleaned this movie up, and I think they have slightly changed the music in the beginning of the series. This is such a beautiful love story and it grabs you from the start. Father Ralph is so torn between his love of God and his love for Meggie. Mary Carson seems to know from the beginning that something's going on between Meggie and Ralph (she herself is in love with Ralph), even if it's not really love at this point in time. But as soon as Meggie Cleary steps into Mary's house you notice the hostility between them even if Meggie is just a child and Mary is old enough to be her grandmother. The mistakes that Meggie's mother Fiona made as a mother (by not loving her daughter as much as she should), those same mistakes are made by Meggie towards her own daughter later on in life. You learn from your parents. I was 12 years old when I saw the series for the first time and it's stuck with me for all these years. It's really a heartbreaking story. The book is good but the series is better.
Movie Review: Riveting Summary: 5 Stars
In my opinion the best mini-series of all times. Beautifully filmed (in California) this is the chronicle of the Cleary family and Father Ralph de Bricassart. Really loved watching it again after so many years have passed since it first played on television. Something that occurred to me that I didn't think of before. How could a man fall in love with a woman that he watched growing up? Fr. Ralph said he loved Meggie like she was his own child. Then when he sees her again after many years away, and she's grown into a beautiful young woman, he falls in love with her. I don't think that was very realistic. I found the story so tragic. Meggie always knew her mother didn't love her the way she loved her sons, especially her first born Frank. That woman Fee, played by Jean Simmons was such a cold fish, I just wanted to slap her. Then Meggie turns around and treats her own daughter the same way. And I couldn't understand Meggie not going to her son's ordination. Mary Carson, played by Barbara Stanwick was such a bitch. One of the saddests movies I've ever seen.
