Movie Reviews of The Thirteenth Floor

Movie Review: A cult film fave
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a stunning movie, simply overshadowed by the realease of "Matrix" about the same time. Not that "Matrix" wasn't great, but "Thirteenth Floor" deserved a lot more attention. Maybe just too cerebral for some--this is thought provoking and requires astute attention. While others have mentioned "Dark City" and "eXistenz," this is my favorite of the three. The photography is stunning, the production values make "eXistenz" look like a student film, and 1930's Los Angeles is beautifully realized. The use of color palette to distinguish the different realities is more effective on DVD than VHS tape. Craig Bierko, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Vincent D'Onofrio (who is unrecognizable from his stint in "Men in Black")are all riveting. I found the ending to be clever, staying true to the theme of the movie while playing out the love affair. This warranted a satisfying second viewing to assure that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Give it a try.

Movie Review: Amazing.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best film from dark 'virtual reality' films such as Dark City and The Matrix. Combine the X-Files (atmosphere) with Dark City (concept) and you'll get a good idea what style The Thirteenth Floor has.

I was expecting this to be a bit average when recommend to me by a friend, but I found this to be an amazingly dark and excellent thiller. It's well thought out and it hooked me more than anything I've seen for ages. The end has so much impact as a revelation.

And as for the comment - he should be horrified when he finds out? Well the fact was he was finding out gradually as everything pointed to him. It all made sense eventually, but resulted in a mix of a great sense of self worthlessness, confusion and anger, not horror for those who found out the truth. Some films are too over the top when handling this type of thing - this was spot on.

Movie Review: Best movie since the Matrix
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie blew me away and left me asking more questions like "How do you know 2024 isn't another simulation?", "Were these simulated worlds used to rehabilitate criminals in the future?", "Were the inhabits of the future playing most all of the roles in the simulated worlds and that is why they claimed to be real and hated characters that would mess up their world?".
I need a second viewing definitely. My wife thought the movie was OK (3 stars) and had a simple answer for the ending. I was about two seconds ahead of the 90's character when he decided to drive off into the desert. I was thinking he should do the same thing at that point and said that to my wife before he did that. Awesome movie I will recommend to everyone, did not expect it to be this great. I will probably buy the DVD. It does lack in extra features.

Movie Review: "Mother"/ "Father" of "Matrix"
Summary: 5 Stars

Really, i'm at 99% sure that idea of Matrix came exactly from this movie.

Most of my views on this film have already been put very effectively by other reviews. Thus: the "predictable" twists still work (and I didn't predict most of them!), the performances are well judged if subtle, and the atmosphere and production values (mostly) lift themselves above the genre and the budget. I like to say that The Thirteenth Floor is an unusually, and genuinely, moral and humanistic tale, for something that is basically entertainment.

I cannot reveal exactly why I hold this opinion without generating plot spoilers, but this aspect should not be difficult to spot. Finally, who else thinks there is a final possible twist right the end, and why do we not see more of the delicately beautiful Gretchen Mol?

Movie Review: This film was very good
Summary: 5 Stars

Since this film had no big stars, and because it was also released around the same time as the Matrix, it was not a very high revenue generating film. Also, there was very little promotion surrounding this film. However, I think this film is great. Second only to The Sixth Sense in twist endings that are only able to be figured out in the end, this film left the viewer wondering what truths will finally unfold. Unfortunately, this film does require some thought in order to be fully appreciated. It does include such things as Imagery, symbolism, and story. You know, the things you learned about in high school and have since been a distant memory. In closing, I think anyone with an IQ over 100 will be able to somewhat appreciate this film for what it is.
