Movie Reviews of The Thirteenth FloorMovie Review: Worlds within worlds within worlds Summary: 5 Stars
Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) has a secret and knows that he will be killed for it. Therefore, he leaves a message or his friend and college, Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko.) Soon Fuller is found dead. Naturally, his college is suspected. Douglas must find the message before he is incarcerated.
So far, this seems standard formula. That is where the formula ends. Douglas must go into a computer simulation to retrieve the message, not so easily done. The simulation takes part in the 30's.
Meantime back in the real world Fuller's daughter shows up to everyone surprise, as no one knew he had a daughter. How will she figure in the mystery?
For people that grew up in L.A. you may recognize some of the locations such as the RMS Queen Mary. Before they told where the oil wells were supposed to be, I was guessing Signal Hill.
Be sure to watch the voice over commentary as it gives more insight as to what they are trying to express.
Only seeing the presentation in Blu-ray I could not contrast it to the original presentation however all the pictures and locations look real and do not lose any definition with 1080p or 46" screen.

Movie Review: Great Movie - Very disappointing disk Summary: 5 Stars
When I first saw this movie on cable about seven years ago I was very pleasantly surprised how entertaining and thought provoking it was. I won't get into a lot of details except to say that I like the way the movie makes you think and the scenery and costumes of 1937 LA is very convincing and contrasts greatly with the dark, chrome and glass look of the present day LA. I think the acting is about perfect for a quiet style of movie and I felt a connection to all of the characters. A couple of years ago I rented The Thirteenth Floor and enjoyed it even more in the Widescreen format. I bought myself a small widescreen HD TV last year and decided to purchase a copy of this movie from Amazon. I was greatly disappointed to find out that it is only Full screen and not Widescreen. It is also annoying that the subtitles are defaulted to be on so you have to turn them off first. I ordered this movie from another company that specifically advertised Widescreen and it too is only Full screen so I returned it. I have since found out that Sony has screwed around with many of its movies and is only releasing them in Full screen format and The Thirteenth Floor is one of them. Apparantly a Widescreen version is no longer available which is a shame because this is one movie that needs to be seen in widescreen.
Movie Review: Competition for the psyche of Dark City! Summary: 5 Stars
When Dark City came out in 1998, it wasn't very popular because of its dark themes and plot that was confusing and lacked the luster of regular Hollywood thrillers. Nevertheless, it is a brilliant psychological movie that blows away Bladerunner by comparison. I first encountered Craig Bierko (Douglas Hall) in The Long Kiss Goodnight in 1996. I had no idea that his role in that movie was his film premiere, but I said to myself that this guy was a great actor. Sure enough, I was right. The Thirteenth Floor is a complicated story about a software executive named Hannon Fuller, who is murdered because of a secret he mistakenly uncovered. But he left a note to his right hand man, Hall, telling him the information. But Hall has to find the letter in the computer dreamworld created by Fuller, and he has to find it fast because the police have named him the prime suspect in Fuller's murder. With a dazzling storyline, and acting that far exceeds the Long Kiss Goodnight, Bierko, Gretchen Mol, and Vincent D'onofrio light up the screen as they each have to play multiple roles (Bierko plays three different personalities!). After watching this movie, you will appreciate good acting, along-side a solid story in front of a good director.
Movie Review: Bladerunner 2 Summary: 5 Stars
Just as in the US, the movie wasn't much of a success around here. In fact, I discovered it by accident, checking out the newest DVDs in the local video store. I decided to rent this movie out... and nothing could ever prepare me for what I got! It would be a waste of my time and yours to try and talk about the philosophical concepts in this movie, and the questions it raises. The only other movie I've watched that was able to do that for me was Bladerunner, hence the title for this review. Watching it, you'll find many other similarities to Scott Ripley's masterpiece. In case you're wondering, The Thirteenth Floor is not a rip-off of any movie (The Matrix was mentioned the most, I believe). They simply have similar elements - the computer-generated reality being the most obvious one. But, being realistic for a moment, how could the computer theme be avoided in a good sci-fi movie of today? All in all, the minor flaws this movie had shouldn't prevent it from being one of the best sci-fi movies of the nineties. Buy or rent it, and see for yourself.
Movie Review: Ghost in the Machine Summary: 5 Stars
In the Thirteenth Floor, we enter a world that mirrors our own, and we are taken a step back into time to see a century lost but revived in a circuitry of machine. And as we are carried across the wave of technology, we question who we really are, and is it our place to play God? The power of imagination falls into our hands, and with it, we dream of life. But are we really living inside the dream of someone else?
In Science-Fiction, we cross into new frontiers, parallel worlds, and watch technology surpass our hopes and fears. We are captivated by stories with driven characters brought to life through the heart and soul of actors, and we are mesmerized by concepts that give way to movies such as The One, Thrill Seekers, and 5ive Days to Midnight. And now we ride the elevator up to the Thirteenth Floor, where we discover a world beyond worlds and love that will exist beyond time. And the definition of Science-Fiction opens the door to who we dream to be, but are we really nothing more but a ghost in the machine?
