Movie Reviews of The Thirteenth Floor

Movie Review: Superb and deserves more attention
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! is the only word i can think of to tell you how i feel about this terrific sci-fic mystery. In fact, I almost missed it due to poor reviews flooding on the net and newspapers. after watching the thirteenth floor, i realize that you have to watch and anaylze the movie by yourself in order to determine if it is good or not instead of trusting everything that is said by the reviews. people have different thinkings and a movie may appeal to one while others may find it disgusting. well, i think the thirteenth floor is one of that kind of movies that one may love it or be confused and thus hate it.

i am not going to give out much about the story 'cause that's exactly what is fascinating about this movie. but i can tell you what makes it such a unique experience for me. there are two important (or weird for some of you) questions that are confusing me all the time, which are why are we born in this world and what will happen after our lives when this world come to an end. the thirteenth floor provides probable answers to both questions. may be our world is just a simulation program manipulated by some higher intelligent beings from another planet or by a computer tech from the future so that everything we see in the world are only someone's fantasy or thoughts. no matter you believe or not, the thirteenth floor may make you think and reevaluate your current beliefs.

even if you do not find the story interesting, you cannot deny that the cinematography and production design are superb. the elegant re-creation of los angeles in the thirties will definitely shine in your eyes in contrast to the coarse and vulgar tone of the present. in fact, i could not find any flaw in the photography work, every shot is just done fantastically! and finally for acting, the four protagonists all gave powerful performance to their roles (all of them have to act at least two roles 'cause they got different identities in the past, present or the future). armin mueller-stahl (shine) gave another strong performance as the old scientist and the creator of the simulated world. gretchen mol, starring as his daughter, is one of the most beautiful actresses i have ever seen on the screen and she proves to be a very versatile actress in this movie.

for people who have watched the matrix, try also to watch this one which i think is much better and deserves more attention.

Movie Review: "Gods Don't Die...WE die!" -- "Final Destination"
Summary: 5 Stars

There is more than just a connection between a quote of dialogue between these two films. Someone out there is saying something...profound...but cleverly hidden.

But if they say it long enough, and cleverly enough, and with enough intrigue and head/brain scratching provocation, people may begin to catch on.

The frame plot seems to be about a virtual reality program (hello, "eXistenZ"!) ...which allows individuals from one level of reality (the one which we as viewers assume is our own level of reality) to download into the virtual reality of 1930's Los Angeles. Now why anyone would want to go to 1930s Los Angeles is another question...but the visuals here are stunning...and you DO want to go there...and back again...the whole 1930s atmosphere of hotel showroom, swoony female singer, backup band, bartenders with sexy smiles and insidious intents...leads the viewer down the concrete (rather than yellow-brick) road to face the ultimate REALITY...and

shocking answer...there is murder and mayhem... and too much foul-language (which really gets in the way) ... and just when you think you have finally got a handle on what it is all about...they take your head off by taking you up another level! There may be another link here, too, with "The Game" -- the same actor who plays the older gentleman with a fondness for 1930s hotel women plays an elderly book publisher who is being fired from his job in "The Game" (if "The Game" isn't life -- or "existenz" as we know it--or the reality we think we are a part of and living in, then what is it?).

The REAL question is -- which film has the best presentation of this hidden puzzle -- "Dark City," "The Thirteenth Floor," or "eXistenZ"? My personal preference is in the order presented in this question. BUY IT! WATCH IT! FIGURE IT OUT!! Your life may depend on it!!

Movie Review: Love the movie..hate Sony
Summary: 5 Stars

Sony Conspiracy to rip off consumers is in play. Sony greed.

BOYCOTT OF SONY STARTING HERE AND NOW.
DO NOT BUY ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS because as one reviewer already noticed that Starman was not re-released in Widescreen in effort to defraud public.

We consumers in the recession economy won't, CAN'T, will not buy overpriced Bluray so Sony has devised a diabolical scheme to FORCE US instead of just lowering Bluray prices.
They thought that when they beat the HD battle they woudl be rich beyond compare.

NOT !!!!

So now Sony has conspired to FORCE US TO BUY BLURAY by buying the rights and then releasing great movies we all want on DVD in WIDESCREEN ONLY IN BLURAY specially the Si Fi movies that MUST be seen in their entirety ie NOT 4:3 Pan and Scan.
They are releasing them in FULLSCREEN 4:3 GARBAGE.

Examples so far:
1. Thirteenth Floor
2. Starman

ARE FULLSCREEN ONLY LIKE SOME STUPID TV SHOW.

The Bluray version is Widescreen but the standard DVD is Fullscreen.
Can you believe this evil corporation?

I HATE SONY MORE THAN ANYTHING AND FOR ME I NOW WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING SONY AGAIN, NO TV, NO PLAYER, NO NOTHING.

We must revolt against them.
The back lash will teach them a lesson.

Boycott Sony products because they are disgusting, greedy pigs who treat their customers like idiots, have the worst customer service, and who MUST force us to buy their products because we will NOT volunteer to buy overpriced Bluray.

GREED AND EVIL RULES SONY. They care nothing for us only ripping us off.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON.

Movie Review: One of the Best Alternate Reality films SPOILERS
Summary: 5 Stars

Ive had a chance finally to view the film at home, in australia, after having to get a DVD (region 2)from britain.Luckily it plays on my Laptop.
This is a really underrated film about world within worlds. An existential film noir where the gumshoe is a scientist, and the secret to be uncovered is really astonishing.
I was surprised by the very Dickian story of a scientist creating a virtual reality system, murdered for knowing too much, and sends the hero off on a similar voyage of discovery; a mysterious woman, a dogged police detective...
What is our world also wasnt real?
Like and unlike the excellent Matrix and Dark City, this film makes a very diffent statement about what our world is what reality is. It seems to lie between the two, but there is no superhero self discovery...this makes the film more relatable.
There are issues with the film in that the dead scientist fears he may be killed...but by whom? And how does he come to learn the true nature of his world...Perhaps he does so thru creating his own simulated world, and finally connects the dots.
and why does the older scientist have a pronouced german accent if he had lived his youth in Los Angeles? HMMM
Well acted and produced wih excellent production design, and a surprisingly charming love story. The actors are terrific as is the music and pacing. and the end song Erase Rewind has a canny poignancy.
The actors were chosen for being able to play different characters.

Movie Review: A tech-noir treat.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was right along the lines of what I was looking for. Lately I've been quite into the Neo Noir and Tech Noir genres. What I had hoped for in eXistenZ, but been disappointed, was realized quite smartly in The Thirteenth Floor.

There's just enough technology used in the movie that it could potentially be considered "tech noir," but moreover it falls squarely into the category of "neo noir," playing with notions of identity, sanity, what defines 'humanity' or the 'soul' in a world of increasingly complex computer simulations made in our image.

I won't give away any of the plot twists and turns. I'll simply say that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I liked the style of the movie and some of the themes presented. I was relatively surprised by the ending twists, though I caught the gist based on a hint they placed just before the explicit expository sequence where it's all explained in some length.

I give it an A+. I don't think it's quite fair to classify it alongside The Matrix, as they really are quite different movies. Though they do share a few themes, certainly (virtual worlds, identity, etc.). This is less an actioner than it is a stylized neo noir-ish mystery.
