Movie Reviews of The Thing (Collector's Edition)Movie Review: Frozen in time Summary: 5 StarsTo many fans, John Carpenter's "The Thing" is as enjoyable to watch today as it was all those years ago. Since then, the advancement of technology in regards to special effects and computer enhanced imagery has set a whole new standard for how one views aliens, monsters, lasers and shape shifting, soul changing bogeymen. For some reason, the effects used to portray the fiendish horror that the characters in the film battles still seems to hold a tight line between slightly goofy and superbly innovative.
If one might find the effects sub-par by today's standards, there are other, perhaps more important elements that makes this film special. For one, the location is one of a kind. Forget haunted houses or locked basements, this thing takes place at a research base in the Arctic. Not only does that bring the element of COLD WEATHER, but it also heightens the element of solitude, which when coupled with a dangerous life threatening (and even world threatening) situation, makes it all the more terrifying. Out here, nobody can hear you scream but the man next to you, and he is probably screaming also because he knows that he is next in line.
The plot is a fun science fiction "find" if you will. The film opens up with a helicopter swooping around towards the camp, with a man shooting a high powered rifle at a sled dog. Why is he shooting? Why does he also have a large amount of explosives? What is going on with the dog? The questions lead to something buried in the ice, but even though this is all interesting, it is just the beginning.
Carpenter spins a tale that really concentrates not so much on the horror or unearthed mystery but the very psychosis of the human mind. All these men are now subject to something out of their control, something as common as catching a cold, but with much more devastating effects. Trust immediately goes out the window as we watch with agony, while trying at the same time to piece together the puzzle and figure out just who is who. This is where the film is the most fun, because each person is presented with enough tying issues that they are ALL suspect.
The cast is distinguished, with Wilford Brimley as a no nonsense doctor, Kurt Russell as another team member who is also a helicopter pilot. Keith David and Charles Hallahan are also portrayed as crew members of the Arctic research team, and with an interesting and fresh take on an alien being that absorbs and changes to any unfortunate dog or human it wants to, The remake of the 1951 classic is still something to behold, and also leaves you at the end...still guessing.
Don't worry with that regard though, because if it makes one feel any better, in the end, you are not alone!
Fans of this film will find the collector edition to be worthwhile, with many interviews with the cast and a good, detailed documentary of the obstacles overcome to make the film in such harsh weather conditions, if anything it gives it all the more accolades for realism in the frigid landscape it is set in.
It would be a shame from a cinematic standpoint, if one had experienced films like Terminator and Predator, but had not yet laid eyes upon "The Thing". Highly recommended!

Movie Review: Please don't confuse this terrible movie with the 1951 Masterpiece Summary: 1 StarsPlease don't confuse this terrible movie with the 1951 masterpiece, 'The Thing from Another World'.
Most movie re-makes are bad, this one is no exception.
Movie Review: Rob Bottin is my hero. Summary: 5 StarsThis is an almost perfect sci-fi/horror flick in every way possible, no matter how hard I try I can not find any fault's with this movie. The acting is top-notch, the direction is superb, the story is great and the special effect's are from another world (pun intended!). Rob Bottin the special effect's guy is a demented genious and has created some of the most gruesome, gory, and just plain incredible special effect's I've ever seen in my life. If you have never seen The Thing by John Carpenter you have truely been missing out. Possibly the best sci-fi/horror flick ever made, and a perfect movie to watch around Halloween.
