Movie Reviews of The Thing (Collector's Edition)Movie Review: THIS IS HOW TO RE-MAKE A FILM!!!! Summary: 5 StarsAaaahhhh...'The Thing'...One of the greatest horror movies ever made.
This is one of the movies I saw at a very young age and is part of why I'm a horror nut. It's been a while since I've seen this one, and just picked it up.
The story is about an Antarctic scientific research team, who after witnessing a bizarre shoot-out with a siberian husky dog, become the victims of an extra-terestrial who can assume the form of any living thing it 'absorbs'. Not only can 'the thing' change shape, but every molecule(or 'piece')is an individual 'thing' with a built-in desire to replicate.
Not only does this film rival 'Halloween' as Carpender's masterpiece, but is the text-book definition of how to sucsessfuly re-make a film.
The plot is much closer to the source material(the novella 'Who Goes There' by John Campbell)than the original movie 'The Thing From Another World'. Right from the start, you get a sence of isolation that only gets worse as the movie progresses. The idea is pretty basic, but Carpender fills in the blanks nicely. We are given everything we need to know, and some things are left up to our imaginations.
The acting is perfect. Kurt Russell, Keith David, Wilford Brimley and the rest all give spot-on performances. Every character was well written and acted, they have 'identity'. They really capture the isolation that each member is dealing with in their own way. After the 'thing' is discovered, there is a mistrust amoungst everyone that only makes things worse.
The editing is perfect. The pace of the movie is amazing. 1st, you get a sence of isolation. 2nd, you empathise with the bordom and aggrivation of the characters. Tension quickly builds, then by the time the gore kicks in you're completely on edge. The way Carpender switches between gore and suspence is flawless.
the music and score match the movie nicely. Done by Carpender, the movie starts with a pulse-like ominous presence and continues on-and-off at the right time.
What can I say about the effects? Made in '82, this movie is a perfect example of why C.G.I. should only be used in horror as a back-up effect. The effects are every bit as effective today as they were 25 years ago, and the gore is utterly AMAZING!!! The gore is tied heavily in with the editing; After the 'mood' of the movie is established, Carpender hits you with some gore that has never been seen in a movie before(or really since), and it's just a taste of what's to come.
This is how to re-make a film!!! You take the source material, stay true to it, improve on it, and take it in new LOGICAL directions. Not only one of the(if not thee)best re-makes, but one of the greatest horror movies of all time!!! Is there anything more to say??
Movie Review: The Scariest Film Ever Made Summary: 5 StarsI am 54 years old, and have been watching horror movies since I was old enough to talk. I saw all the old sci-fi's going back even to "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," "Nosferatu," the original "Frankenstein" and "Dracula," and the original of this film by Howard Hawks, which was excellent in its own way. I've seen many current horror films, as well. (I do not count the current spate of movies about sadistic killings, as I find they have no reason to exist but to excite a vicarious interest in bloodletting. Evidently, I don't share that taste, so I find such films vapid and ultimately unengaging.)
John Carpenter's "The Thing" is the scariest of them all. It uses no CGI, ironically relying for its thrills on a series of visually loathsome burlesques of alien birth. The suspense is provided by combining a low-level, background fear of being cut off from rescue in the Antarctic with the more immediate terror of being dependent upon a small group of companions, any of whom may have been imperceptibly transformed into voracious aliens. The resulting paranoia jumps off the chart.
The cast is uniformly excellent, led by Kurt Russell's wonderfully understated performance, which is so down-to-earth as to render the remainder of the proceedings positively plausible and therefore the more terrifying.
Movie Review: "The Thing" still scares! Summary: 4 StarsThe DVD came in great condition, right on time and the movie is still remarkable for the genuine frights, grisly special effects, and the psychological drama of a few 'regular guys" being isolated and terrorized in the middle of an unforgiving artic wasteland! Great stuff ;)
Movie Review: maybe the greatest monster movie ever made... Summary: 5 Starsi have to start off with the effects.. it is completely amazing that they could pull off such over the top gore on film in 1982. ive seen a lot of horror ranging from the early sixties to today, and i gotta say, this may have been at the plateau of gore effects when it came out, and it holds up really well today.
as big of a landmark as Halloween was, this is the highlight of John Carpenters career. i saw this for the first time recently, and im just blown away. this movie is fantastic.
great acting all around with Kurt Russel(Big Trouble in Little China) as the lead. paranoia sets in fast in this secluded research facility as the body count rises and the people learn the true nature and abilities of their attackers.
i dont want to spoil anything, but basically these creatures have been frozen for 100,000 years. their origins are unknown outside the fact that they are not of this world. they have a sort of shape-shifting ability to imitate any living creatures they see. as you can imagine, trust is lacking between the survivors at this point.
the effects are amazing. the acting is totally solid all around. very well written plot builds up tension and questions until the explosive conclusion. all horror fans need to have this in their collection.
Movie Review: OK Summary: 3 StarsOK movie, I thought the HD side of this movie was a bit ordinary, not much better than DVD. I wouldn't spend the extra to buy this again in HD, DVD is good enough.
Story OK, entertainment value OK.
