Movie Reviews of The Thing (Collector's Edition)

Movie Review: Thumbs Up on "The Thing, Collector's Edition"
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great DVD, and the bonus commentary by John Carpenter and Kurt Russell is very fun and informative. Thumbs up on "The Thing, Collector's Edition"!

Movie Review: Amazingly Entertaining
Summary: 5 Stars

Awesome!. One of the best horror movies ever made. It gets you thinking: what can you do if you were there?. It is a war cry for any horror movie fan. Grotesque and attracting.

Movie Review: Falls short of its full potential
Summary: 3 Stars

John Carpenter's remake of The Thing is a closer rendition to the original story by John Campbell but in my opinion fails to live up to its full potential. All the elements of a truly great horror film are there but I'm afraid this film falls into a familiar hollywood trap: it falls in love with its state-of-the-art special effects and neglects good writing. What could be better scenairo to inspire dread and suspense than to have an alien being that can perfectly imitate humans and yet still wants to destroy the remaining characters in a remote and hostile outpost. Carpenter does touch on this scenairo but instead of developing the characters more - exploring their fears and distrust, and building suspense - he's more interested in showcasing the special effects: the gory monster and explosions. In order to build more suspense and keep the audience guessing who is human and who is an imitation, it requires showing less of the monster, but that means less of the special effects and hollywood loves special effects. It's a shame because I think this could have been a really great movie.

Movie Review: The Best of It's Kind
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not really into Sci-Fi movies but, this is one of the most suspenseful and just overall entertaining movies I've ever seen. It has some of the best special effects ever made and I can't see how anyone with even the slightest imagination couldn't like it. Some other Sci-Fi movies I like are They Live and Alien (The Director's Cut).

Movie Review: Carpenter's 2nd horror classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Largely ignored at the time of release, Carpenter's "The Thing" has grown in stature in years to become a cult classic. With his compatriot, Kurt Russell and a great cast (Richard Dysart, Wilford Brimley, David Clennon, Keith David in one of his first film roles, Donald Moffat, Richard Masur, etc), Carpenter fashioned a film that is closer to the original story, "Who Goes there?". This was one of my first HD's that I purchased, and it is definitely a test on the audio/visual aspects of your system. Along with the original "Halloween" and "Assault on Precinct 13" this should have put Carpenter in league with Spielberg and Lucas but unfortunately his work has been mediocre in recent years. Definitely a must see for horror/sci-fi fans and Carpenter buffs!!
