when some people think of classic, gothic horror, they think of Dracula or Frankenstein, or the Shining. This movie and the short story it was based on fit the bill.
one of the few things we have when we are alone with someone--anyone, is trust. trust that when we are sleeping, nothing will happen to us. this movie takes advantage of that in the worst way. a group of men, all working in the unforgiving antarctic for different reasons, and some don't like each other. they are isolated from others by distance and the harsh conditions--and there is a monster among them.
when Carpenter first created this film, it was not only panned by critics, but he was called "the pornographer of violence" for creating it. imagine creating something so wonderful, and having small minds tear it apart. i'm suprized he didn't quit making movies altogether.
fortunately, critical reactions have cooled, and the movie is consistently listed among the top 20 or so horror movies of all time. you have to watch it for yourself to see why. if you haven't seen this movie, and are watching it for the first time, it will be on par w/ watching "Alien" as a virgin viewer. you won't regret it.

I have watched this movie numerous of times and I find that I love it more each time. Yesterday I let my eleven year old son watch it. When I told him what year that it came out he said, "Ahhh, come on, I hate it when you make me watch those old, stupid movies!" Within ten minutes he was engrossed. When the movie was over he told me that The Thing is now his favorite horror movie and that he was going to have nightmares. My point is that The Thing is such an incredible movie that every person, no matter what generation, is going to love it.Movie Review: WTF!!!

they sure didn't give this movie the credit it deserved. i'm telling you john carpenter did it again. man, this movie was extra good. the actors did a phenomenal job, the whole idea was brilliant, and the setting...what better place. who's who. the aliens really do exist among us, but as humans. this one was just plain evil. for it's time the effects were great, personally one of the best. total isolation, the thing, paranoia sets in, distrust, and nowhere to go. all you have is to fight back, whether you're the last man standing. the ending was good, he leaves it all up to you. if they don't kill each other the weather surely will. i do recommend this mind blowing classic.
