Movie Review: Unnecessary five years ago and even more unnecessary now.
Summary: 2 Stars
This is the Halloween or Scream of it's generation in that it kick-started something of a revolution in the horror industry. Unfortunately, the revolution is nothing but remakes, remakes, remakes. And who says this generation has nothing original to offer?
The only way this film can be construed as "raw" is if you compare it to Cinderella or the Jonas Brothers concert movie. Sure, the cast gets dirty and bloodied up, but that doesn't mask what this film truly is - another glossy, soulless flick from Hollywood's steady stream of "edgy" product waiting to be devoured by 14 year olds who think they're learning a thing or two about quality horror all because it's rated R.
I acknowledge that it's a little better than I Still Know What You Did Last Summer or Valentine, but it's not really something to brag about, is it? The film boasts two bright spots for me - #1. Lee Ermey and #2. Jessica Biel's hot bod. Ermey clearly has fun as the sheriff/murderous coot and Biel gets wet a lot. Five stars. The filmmakers incorporate a lot of those sound effects that sound like the glare from a sharp blade amplified to Spinal Tap proportions. Minus one star. The film also tries to "humanize" Leatherface (whatever that means). How typical Hollywood. Minus one star. Did you know they're remaking Suspiria? Thanks, TCM! Minus one star.

Summary of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Inspired by a true story and the classic 1974 film. A group of teenagers take a detour from a road trip and what happens next is beyond anyone?s darkest fears and raw nightmares.The 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adheres to the pure and simple slasher movie formula: Introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel (Summer Catch) wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff, and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about the nauseating sensation of waiting for something to jump out of the dark. Also featuring Eric Balfour (Six Feet Under) and R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket, Mail Call). --Bret Fetzer
